ROLEX SHANGHAI MASTERS

October 4, 2025

Learner Tien

Shanghai, China

Mixed Zone

L. TIEN/C. Moutet

4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Q. Down two breaks in the second, you win that. Down a break in the third. Just talk about another great comeback victory.

LEARNER TIEN: Yeah, really happy to pull that one off. It was definitely looking rough, especially in that second set. I didn't really lose hope. I feel like in a lot of my return games I had looks, whether it be 15-30 or Love-15 points that I feel like I should be winning to go up Love-30, and I just let a lot of chances slip by. So just try to keep a level head as best I could, and just keep believing that I was still in the match.

Q. Coming from behind yesterday and today where the conditions were very tough, do you feel like your mental strength helped you a lot?

LEARNER TIEN: Yeah, the conditions today felt amazing compared to yesterday. It was still pretty tough out there today. I think just staying tough mentally and just keeping my head down, not really counting myself out of these matches has really helped me pull through some of these matches where I'm down big.

Q. You had a battle at the Aussie Open with him, and I guess going in you probably knew it was going to be a tough one as well, right?

LEARNER TIEN: Yeah, I mean, he's a great player. He's really tricky. I feel he doesn't get enough credit for how good of a tennis player he is. I mean, he's crazy talented, makes it so hard for you to win some of these points. I knew it was going to be a tough match. He beat me in straight sets on grass. Every time we've played each other it's been so hot, conditions have been so tough. So, yeah I'm super happy to come through.

Q. How is your work with Michael Chang so far, and did you watch his matches when you were growing up?

LEARNER TIEN: I haven't seen too much of him playing, honestly. He's helped me a lot. He's really, really been a great influence on me. He's really helped me kind of, you know, in my first year. I don't have that much experience playing week-to-week, and someone like him that has been around coaching and playing for so long, his insight and his experience has been super, super helpful.

Q. Curious, because the climate and humidity is quite different between Beijing and Shanghai. Did Michael tell you specifically about the tactics to deal with the humidity and the slower courts here in Shanghai?

LEARNER TIEN: Yeah, we've been trying to find good ways to adjust and still find a way through these conditions. It's definitely helped having someone with me that has so much experience in different conditions. He knows what it's like to play these matches. You know, it's been super helpful and, yeah, I mean, it's been great.
