Quick Quotes
Q. Bringing Ryder Cup winning form to the Dunhill Links, 5-under 67, how do you feel about your first day's work?
TOMMY FLEETWOOD: I played nice actually, yeah. I got on a really nice run middle of the round there on the back nine. And then even at the end, great putts coming in. I would have loved a couple more to have dropped, but I think 5-under today was a nice score. It was beautiful conditions. Scoring is very good on the leaderboard, but I'll take it.
Q. How do you do it from a golfing perspective, playing a course like Bethpage and those conditions, difficult, long, the rough is down, to coming and playing the links with very little preparation? You know, normally as you come into the Open summer, you've got the Scottish as a warm-up, you've got other events to get into that links golf mindset. This is like a handbrake turn, isn't it?
TOMMY FLEETWOOD: Yeah, I think the hardest thing is like the conditions -- I played sound yesterday. Conditions are fairly receptive where you can get away with a lot off the tee at this time of year. That always helps.
The hardest thing is how much the wind is affecting it, start lines, clubbing it a little bit. Takes you a little bit to get your eye. Yesterday I played 18 holes with some friends, and I was sort of picking it up as I went along, if you like. I picked it up quite quick. I grew up -- a lot of us grew up on this kind of stuff. But still always amazes you how much the wind hits you and how short the ball can go at times and then making that adjustment.
Greens, links greens, like I felt like, especially towards the end, I was a lot closer with my reads. And so I feel like I did a better job as the round went on.
But happy to be here. It's a great week. Hopefully another few good days.
Q. Playing with Frankie on the Old Course yesterday, what a couple of weeks he's had. Because he was at Bethpage, had his birthday there?
TOMMY FLEETWOOD: He's having a good time. He's taking too much of the spotlight. Yeah, he brought a wedge and putter yesterday and came out, and then walking down 17, that bunker is like one of the deepest bunkers in the world. He's like, Oh, I'll have a go.
It's great for me. I love it so much. Like it's definitely my favorite thing about golf, is being able to play with family and stuff like that. And like I say, Frankie, yeah, too much of the stoplight. We've got to get him off the TV for a little bit.
