Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea
LYDIA KO: The only way I thought we were going to extend the match was for me to hole the putt on 17. At both our lengths it's not a guaranteed birdie putt at all, but I felt like I shouldn't let the team down.
Charley holed so many good birdie putts that kind of kept the match going, and I just came for the ride for the last two.
Q. As you come off the first pair playing for the world, how did it go? You went down one on the first, and then did you have a great day?
CHARLEY HULL: They got off to a fast start. They birdied -- they had three birdies on the trot the first -- so they birdied the first, the second, and then we birdied the second and the third, and they birdied the fourth, the fifth, the sixth, so they made a few putts for birdies.
LYDIA KO: The 7th hole was the first time both groups just had a par, so I think it wasn't like we were losing holes because we were playing necessarily bad, but they were ham-and-egging it very well, and Charley was the ham and there was no egg at some point. I was like, I can't play four-ball and only make one birdie.
But in general, we knew that it was going to be a tough match. I think the Japanese team are really strong. I asked Miyu coming down the last, is this course very much like Japan, and she said yeah, the undulation and the type of grass is very familiar to them. For us, sometimes we can't even judge how a wedge shot is going to come out.
CHARLEY HULL: We keep saying, I'm not used to this grass and I keep getting fliers with like a lob wedge.
LYDIA KO: Yeah, so obviously they're more familiar to it, but we hit a lot of clutch putts. I felt like there was a lot of good golf. Today is probably going to be one of the toughest matches, and with the way we finished, hopefully that gives us good momentum for the next couple days.
Q. You really came across with great team spirit.
CHARLEY HULL: Yeah, it was pretty chilled out there. It was good. It was nice. I kind of knew Lydia was going to make the putt on the last because she had an up-and-down challenge on the last hole yesterday, an impossible up-and-down, and you got up-and-down and won 200 bucks from your caddie, so that was an easy putt compared to yesterday.
Q. 200 bucks?
LYDIA KO: $200. I hit a flier out of the rough, and I had like an impossible chip shot from behind the green yesterday, and I asked Paul, my caddie, what will you give me if I make up-and-down, and he said $100, and then he said, no, I'll give you 200. Then I made up-and-down, so it was a great way to end our practice session.
I've known Charley for a really long time, and obviously we've never played in this kind of format together, but I think just knowing the person obviously makes it a little bit easier out there.
CHARLEY HULL: I was actually talking yesterday about how we played back in 2013 together, when we was like the freshmen on Tour and stuff, and now we're --
LYDIA KO: We're older.
Q. Were you freshmen together?
LYDIA KO: I think it was pretty close.
CHARLEY HULL: And we played when we were both amateur. We were getting invites into pro events and we played a few times together as well.
LYDIA KO: We were talking about the time I went over for the British Am and I think we both got a lot of invites to play LET as well so that's where we first met. To kind of see how far we've come from being amateurs to here and winning on Tour and becoming teammates is honestly really cool. I think it's just a great start to the week.
Q. How did you decide who was going to play with who?
LYDIA KO: Can't give away that. It might change for every country we play. At the end of the day, in four-ball you just have to play really solid. I think there is a little bit more strategy when it comes to foursomes --
CHARLEY HULL: I was just kind of like, Lydia is going to be the team leader and she can make all the decisions.
LYDIA KO: It's too much pressure on my shoulders. But it's great; I think all four of us are very relaxed.
CHARLEY HULL: Yeah, laid back.
LYDIA KO: It's not like someone has a super strong opinion, and if somebody does, I think we all pitch in and agree for the most part. I think that's what makes it easy. Nobody is kind of overriding here.
I knew it wasn't going to be that difficult for us to do the pairings.
Q. So there's no one captain, you're just all mutually --
LYDIA KO: We're all captains.
CHARLEY HULL: But Lydia is the chief captain.
Q. Did you learn anything about each other playing as partners today?
CHARLEY HULL: Not really.
LYDIA KO: I don't think anything new. Charley is so impressive. The strength she has, with the distance off the tee but also the creativity and the shots she can play is always something that I've been very impressed. I just love her creativity and versatility.
On a golf course like this, I think it is obviously a little bit more one-dimensional. You're not having to curve as many shots and all that.
CHARLEY HULL: Lydia is so clutch under pressure, it was kind of like -- like the last two holes it was just pure Lydia and I'm glad I wasn't playing against her, I was playing with her.
LYDIA KO: I'm glad Charley was my partner.
