Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea
THE MODERATOR: Welcome everybody to the champions press conference at the Hanwha LIFEPLUS International Crown. Happy to be joined by the winning team Australia, Minjee Lee, Steph Kyriacou, Grace Kim, and Hannah Green.
Minjee, we're going to start here with you, the team MVP. Just an incredible run this week, topping off your runner-up finish at TPC Harding Park two years ago. How proud are you of your whole team and everyone you've got here this week?
MINJEE LEE: Yeah, so I'm really excited that we were able to win all together. I think it's even sweeter because I could do it with all of these girls.
Yeah, obviously we all played with a lot of grit and a lot of perseverance and resilience this week just to get into the final match. I think we all did really well. I'm just really happy we're all sitting here in the champions press conference.
Q. We'll ask you a quick question about your final match. It was really tight right up until the end there. Tell us about how you felt out there on the course and particularly as you were coming down the stretch there winning those final two holes to get your victory.
MINJEE LEE: Right now I can't really even recall what -- yeah, it was a really tight match from the very beginning. We kind of went back and forth with birdies. I don't think we won a hole with a par. We were both winning with birdies.
Yeah, I think I holed a nice putt for birdie, and then the next hole, Angel made bogey, and I only needed to make par to go 2-up on 17. I think we both played really solid. It was just nice to be able to win that first match.
Then saw Hannah win her match, and we were pretty much all good. It was cool.
Q. Hannah, I'll go down to you on the far end. With the second match, you had as much as a 3-up lead throughout that, but Yealimi really chipped away at the end. Were you feeling any nerves there as you got down to the end of the match?
HANNAH GREEN: Yeah, definitely. I feel like I played probably my best golf today, and I knew it was going to be a tough match against Yealimi. We both have pretty similar games. We were both neck and neck off the tee. When I would make a birdie putt, she would make one top of me, so it was going to be a tough match.
When I got to 3-up, I knew I needed to keep my foot on the gas and not let her creep in. My putt on the last hole, I was very nervous. I knew exactly what it was for. I said to the girls, I was just happy I got on the board. I'm glad I could contribute in some way this week.
Q. Grace and Steph ended up with a tied match. I know you ended up popping back to celebrate with your teammates. Grace, I actually want to start with you, the big putt you made on the 18th hole earlier today, how much adrenaline did you take from that into this afternoon?
GRACE KIM: Yeah, knowing that we obviously -- Steph and I had a good pairing and our bonding was really good on and off the golf course. We just wanted to keep that momentum going.
She holed a really nice putt to get us playing today yesterday, so I was inspired by that today so I tried to do the same. I'm glad it worked out.
Obviously Hannah and Minjee, they've obviously got all the experience from the past. Yeah, they have done it before, so they've got, I guess, the confidence. They've got the game to get it done.
Steph and I are like the kids, so we were trying to pair up together and play well. So, yeah, that worked out really well.
Q. Steph, one question for you before we open it up. Your second year for you on this team. You've been incredibly successful, your partnerships with Minjee, singles, foursomes, and four-balls as well. Overall, how does this team gel? Grace being the new one on the team, but certainly it seems that the four of you and Team Australia historically always just gels so well as a team. Is that what brings about so much success for you?
STEPHANIE KYRIACOU: Yeah, I definitely think it helps. We all can tolerate each other pretty well. We hang out on and off the golf course most weeks, so I think just having that team bonding early helps us.
I think, Greeny or Minjee touched on it earlier in the week, it was kind of hard to pick the pairings because it doesn't really matter who we play with kind of thing. Yeah, it makes the days easier. It makes it a little more enjoyable. It makes it walking up those hills a little bit easier. No more hills, thank God.
Q. Grace, you've had a spectacular season. I was hoping you'd just kind of put it in perspective what the year has meant to you and how your Aussie teammates here have helped you find early success on the LPGA.
GRACE KIM: Only being my third year out here and having this much success, I think it just shows how much Australian golf has brought us -- how far it has brought us, not only just the backing we have back at home but the players out here. They just know how it can be lonely, it can not be as glamorous as it looks on TV.
So the older girls like Minjee and Hannah, like I've said before, they've been there and done that before. They know what it's going to be like for us to feel what a third year might be like.
Just being able to rely on these girls have been, I guess, yeah, really successful in our sense, in our bonding and our friendship. Yeah, I think really settles the mind a lot just being able to message them whenever I can just for a little bit of help or even just being there. Yeah, just to be able to spend some time with them definitely brings a lot of success in our team.
Q. Minjee, you've had so much success individually. How does winning as a team compare?
MINJEE LEE: I think you share the joy of winning, so I think it is really nice and special because we don't have too many opportunities to play for our country and as a team. I do think it's much more special to be able to do it with a group of girls that I see on Tour pretty much week in, week out. Yeah, I think it's really nice.
Q. Grace, you told me you were really excited to go to Olive Young. How many times have you guys gone to Olive Young this week?
GRACE KIM: Three, four. A handful. We've done a few trips for sure. I even got our physios a skin care routine. So everyone's on board.
Q. Hannah, I know you were obviously there at Harding Park in '23 and I know you guys took that loss pretty hard. For you personally, how does this one feel?
HANNAH GREEN: Yeah, it was tough at Harding Park because I felt like we used pretty much all of our energy to beat Sweden in the morning of Sunday, and once we got to Thailand they were just too good.
That was a really fun week with the girls, and this week everyone's played amazing, everyone's hit the shots when they needed to, made the putts when they needed to. We all knew what we needed to do today, and I'm glad we had a bit of a break in between because I think we were all pretty tired.
Yeah, this is really special and gives me a lot of confidence in my game for the rest of the season as well.
Q. Steph, I know you were kind of the young one in '23. How does it feel compared with Kempy on the team, put it that way? How did it feel to pass those reins to Gracie this week, and what has this experience meant with her, experience as far as match play goes?
STEPHANIE KYRIACOU: I don't know how much wisdom I passed onto Grace. We played match play growing up so we've had a bit of experience with our courses back at home. She was familiar. She didn't really need any sort of a pep talk, I think. We both kind of struggled maybe at the start of the week, putting a bit too much pressure on ourselves to perform for your team, but we kind of just said let's go out and do our best. That's all that can happen.
I think we came in clutch in some high pressure moments, and it was just good fun.
Q. I just want to ask how much inspiration the yellow tutu provided. I feel like there's a story there that needs to be told.
GRACE KIM: I think it was my second round in Portland this year. My physio/osteo said, if you shoot 7-under, what would be motivating? I said, why don't you wear a yellow tutu at the International Crown. Yeah, I shot 65 or whatever it was, and he's keeping that for good omen now. Maybe we'll just keep the bets going.
THE MODERATOR: I think we'll wrap it on a yellow tutu. Congratulations. I know many of you are headed to Malaysia. See you next week. See you all down the road, and hope to see you all in two years at the Hanwha LIFEPLUS International Crown.
