Turf Sprint

THE MODERATOR: Gentlemen, we're going to begin the post-race press conference with Josh and Rich Mendez and their trusty assistant, who's headed up to the podium as well.

Rich, just want to get your reaction to winning this Breeders' Cup race with Shisospicy, the first race with older horses, looked like a race that had a lot of pace in it, and yet she took the track and ran them off their feet.

RICH MENDEZ: There's been so many ups and downs with her as far as people's thinking. She can't go long. She's probably too slow on the short-side. I told -- when we had our post position, I looked at the guys, and I said it doesn't matter. She races different here. I said it earlier, she was the best turf sprinter in the country at the 3-year-old level, but now she's officially the best turf sprinter in the world.

Actually, I think she just broke a record. She's the first 3-year-old that won this race. So I'm pretty excited, to say the least.

THE MODERATOR: Josh, what was this experience like for you?

JOSH MENDEZ: Special. Coming from the music business and having success and then coming into something that's total opposite of entertainment and music and being able to be successful in this side of things, it just solidified that there's something special about my old man, and I'm following in his footsteps.

We all are. The family's here. This was a special moment for all of us. My brother-in-law Cameron plays a big role into this whole thing for us. My lady for eight years, my mother, our whole family, my two little brothers, Nick, Quincy. I appreciate everybody on the team. It's just been surreal at this moment.

Q. Take us through the race from an owner's point of view, please.

RICH MENDEZ: When she broke, the whole idea was like what are the instructions for the jockey? It's like, if she breaks on top, she does what she just really did, right? To see her break on top, come down inside and just stay the course, set the pace.

Before the race, Irad said, I'm about to turn her on and then turn her off. That's exactly what he did.

Q. In the paddock they said that she wasn't the fastest in the field. After seeing her performance, how do you feel about that, or what do you have to say about that?

CAMERON DULGAR: We kind of knew what she was coming in. I think that her speed is kind of commonplace at this point. To be honest, it didn't really matter what anyone said. We knew she was going to show up, as she has in every race.

If she broke clean and got a clean trip, we knew it was hers to lose. So that's what happened.

THE MODERATOR: Cameron, if you could please spell your first and last name just so everybody who is watching has it.

RICH MENDEZ: Dulgar for 425 at Flightline Colt. That's who that is!

CAMERON DULGAR: C-a-m-e-r-o-n D-u-l-g-a-r.

Q. What are your plans now for 2026 and on?

RICH MENDEZ: She's going to the auction to Night of the Stars over at Fasig. She's become a family member. It's going to be hard. To be honest with you, it will probably piss people off, but I don't know if I truly want to pull the trigger on selling her. She owes us nothing. She's given us everything. We'll see.

If she does stay with us, she'll get a couple months off, well-deserved, at our farm in Ocala.

THE MODERATOR: Obviously Jose D'Angelo has a runner in the next race. Pending the results of the next race, we might have him coming in to talk about two runners. For now, congratulations to Shisospicy.
