Press Conference

.

THE MODERATOR: Delighted to be joined in the media centre and the BMW PGA Championship by a former winner in Tyrrell Hatton.

Lovely day for the Pro-Am today but unfortunately rain at the end. How have you enjoyed the day and the week so far?

TYRRELL HATTON: That was a good day. Thankfully we didn't get too wet this morning. That was definitely a positive. I had a fun group and enjoyed their company and excited to be back here. This tournament is special to me, so, yeah, looking forward to getting started tomorrow and hopefully have a good week.

TOM CARLISLE: How nice is it are to you come back to a tournament where you can see your face on posters around the site?

TYRRELL HATTON: Probably not many people want to see my face on a big poster to be honest. No, it is nice coming back here. I'm also a member here at Wentworth, so I do try and get back here on my weeks off. It is a place I know well and has a good feel about it.

Q. How difficult was it not to play here after having such a good run here, a win, finishing fourth and second?

TYRRELL HATTON: I remember I finished second two years ago, and yeah, I can't remember my results apart from that and 2020. As I said it's a course I know very well and a place that I feel very comfortable, apart from the fourth tee shot. I don't think anybody likes the fourth tee shot here. I enjoy the crowds genuinely; the support I've received over the years has got better.

Q. So you were at Greenbrier this time last year. Did it feel strange? Were your thoughts here at all?

TYRRELL HATTON: We were in -- I think it was Dallas, actually. Yeah, for sure. It was hard to miss this event. But that's also the decision that I made to join LIV at the start of last year. It kind of is what it is and I was hoping that coming into 2025 that it would work out that I would be able to play this event, and thankful it has. Yeah, as I said, very excited to be back.

Q. Slightly different tack. Jon Rahm had a six-foot Darth Vader in his office, a surprise to us. Do you have any super nerd secrets?

TYRRELL HATTON: No, that one didn't surprise me about Rahm. It did make me laugh. Everyone was laughing at that. No, I think I'm quite boring. I don't think I have any six-foot Darth Vaders, yeah.

Q. Wonder if you had any thoughts on Bethpage and your game in that environment?

TYRRELL HATTON: I would like to think that I have played enough tournaments with big crowds that you enjoy the atmosphere that's created from that, and certainly this week with the home fans, their support, it's always good fun.

It will probably be a different experience in a few weeks' time, but you're dealing with that as you can, and it will be a new experience in a way but I also did play an away Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. So I don't think there will be anything too surprising.

Q. The team is going to Bethpage next Monday, Tuesday and players are going to do their own thing for a few days. What is your plan and how beneficial can that whole week be going into the Ryder Cup?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I'm looking forward to the practise trip. I've not played Bethpage since 2018 or 2019, the PGA, '19. So as of right now, I don't remember too many holes but I'm sure when I get there on Monday, it will come back.

Yeah, I'm excited for that trip and being with the guys. In the back part of the week, there's not a better place for golf. U.S. Open is at Shinnecock next year. So I imagine there will be a few of us hopefully trying to get to play there. So that will be a much more enjoyable experience than next June -- just being honest. Yeah, I think just playing a bit of golf and being on the right time zone will be great coming into Ryder Cup week.

Q. You're paired with Bob this week, maybe not too much to read about that, but that would be quite a pairing, would it not?

TYRRELL HATTON: Be a good amount of moaning, wouldn't it? (Laughter) Be awful. (Laughter)

Q. Large crowds versus hostile crowds seem to be different. How did you deal with that and what is the most hostile crowd you've ever played against or in front of?

TYRRELL HATTON: I feel like probably the most hostile crowd was at Whistling Straits. It was a weird time in the world with still in COVID and people can't travel. So there wasn't many European fans at that Ryder Cup.

At least in two weeks' time, there will be a lot more European fans. For sure, it will be heavily sided for the U.S. Team but yeah, it will still be a fun atmosphere, I'm sure.

Q. You understand Wisconsin and their hostility, and New York and their hostility, it may be a little bit different.

TYRRELL HATTON: I haven't experienced it yet so I can't comment on that. I would like to think they're still going to be respectful and we'll go from there.

Q. How proud are of your achievement that you played so many events to get an automatic place. How much are you prepared to play a leadership role on the team this time?

TYRRELL HATTON: Well, qualifying for the team automatically was one of my main goals for this year. I knew going into the Desert Classic that I was going to have that week and four majors. So I was going to have five events to earn enough points to be an automatic, and from my three previous Ryder Cups of always making the team automatically, I wanted to keep that going.

So I thought I had blown that chance after the Sunday I had at The Open. But then, yeah, Luke called me on the Sunday night of Indy, which was the - I can't think what that -- the end of the second FedEx event. Yeah, he called me to say that the guys weren't earning points in Atlanta, and I'd actually made the team automatically.

That was a very nice phone call to receive, and I was very -- yeah, I was over the moon to be honest. So Jon had just won individual, so we had a bit of a tear-up. Yeah, that was a messy night, yeah.

Q. A sign of things to come maybe at Bethpage?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I do not want to feel that bad the next day. Yeah, that was aggressive. I won't go into details of what state that I woke up to.

Q. Don't feel bad.

TYRRELL HATTON: If you want to know, I'll tell you. When I good actually get back into the room, I fell across the bed sideways, and face down in that position, and then I had woken myself up throwing up in that position. And I had then fallen back asleep in that position, and then as I'd woken up, I had gotten sick all down my arms, both sides, all down my shirt.

I get off the bed and walk around to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and I'm sick in my face, in my bed. How I set an alarm to make a flight in a few hours' time, I don't know.

But yeah, then waking up in a slightly more sober state was horrendous, and having to clean up that -- I mean, I ended up calling Emily, "I don't know what to do." I was rushing to make the room somewhat acceptable before leaving.

So yeah, I ended up stripping in the bed, leaving some cash and a note, saying I was "really sorry, I was sick in the bed in the night, please throw it in the trash." I feel like I did the right thing but obviously in a pretty bad state.

Q. A remake of that?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I don't ever want to get to that state again to be honest.

Q. A night out --

TYRRELL HATTON: I think that if you saw the room that we just sat in drinking, you'd be like, what are you doing? But it ended up being fun. Well, I fell asleep at the table and then I ended up getting woken up and everyone had basically left. It just shows I was good craic at the end of the night, anyway.

Q. The Americans are playing in California this week. Will you have an eye on what they are doing?

TYRRELL HATTON: To be honest, no, I don't think it matters too much of how you play this week. Because we all golf is a pretty stupid game that guys can miss however many cuts in a row and it looks like they are in a pretty bad place, and the following week, you go and win. Like, where does that come from?

Yes, I'm sure, everyone like to play well this week, and feel like you take some momentum and confidence into the Ryder Cup. But in some ways, it doesn't really make a difference how you will perform when you get there.

Q. What was your take on Keegan's decision not to play, what was your verdict on that?

TYRRELL HATTON: It was obviously a very tough decision for him because he's played some amazing golf. I think how he -- I'm trying to think of how he answered it where -- I don't want to say the wrong word. But he said that he was asked to do a job to captain a team, so how he made the decision to not play is what he thought was the best way forward.

I can't imagine how that was because he's played some great golf over the last few years for sure.

Q. Back to the puking. After the 2018 Ryder Cup, did you have a screaming match as well --

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I was shouting at the toilet that night. Yeah, it happens quite often when I drink too much. Some people just aren't sick but I guess I'm one of those people that it just has to come out.

Q. I know you said you don't want to feel that way again but if you did win at Bethpage, do you think that would happen again?

TYRRELL HATTON: I'd like to think that we would celebrate pretty well, and there is a good chance I will be throwing up. But yeah, hopefully I'm not like falling asleep and I can enjoy most of the night with everyone.

Q. What were you drinking specifically?

TYRRELL HATTON: Well, I had like six glasses of wine at dinner, and then I had a double gin and tonic, drunk that at a very normal rate. And then Jon was deciding what he wanted and he said Disaronno Sours, and I was like, perfect, go on them. They go down very easily. And then I was starting the chant of basically getting someone to down it, which then every cocktail that then followed was a shot.

So we then ran out of Disaronno Sour. The guy at the bar made some hazelnut sour which wasn't great and there was a few of them. Then there was a margarita and then there was a strawberry vodka thing. God, it was aggressive. It was horrible. But I mean, it was funny at the time.

TOM CARLISLE: Tyrrell, entertaining as always. Thank you.
