Press Conference
ERRANI-VAVASSORI/Muchova-Rublev
4-1, 5-4
THE MODERATOR: We'll ask you both for your thoughts on a successful day.
ANDREA VAVASSORI: Yeah, I think was great. We had many emotions. I think it's always nice to play with Sara for the energy. We always try to put our max energy on the court.
I think also on the second match, the stadium was packed, so it was also great to see a lot of people. I think also the second set of the second match was great, like so many good points, so many rallies.
I think also is nice for mixed doubles to be seen on a big stage. I think the best thing we can take from this week is that more people will get to know mixed doubles. I think also for the future will be a good thing.
THE MODERATOR: Sara?
SARA ERRANI: Yeah, I mean, we had so much fun. I'm really happy that we can share the court again. We don't have many tournaments where we can play together. To have the chance here to play more matches is so good.
Was really nice to play there on that amazing court. To have the chance tomorrow to play on center court will be so good.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. You played a bunch of mixed doubles tournaments before. What felt similar to the other experiences and what felt different or new in this US Open today?
ANDREA VAVASSORI: I think, yeah, pretty similar. Now it's one year that we play full together. From last year of Wimbledon. We started also to practice a lot together, to get to know each other also better out of the court. We became great friends also outside of the court. This is the best thing of our doubles, no? (Stream temporarily frozen.)
-- personally, I struggle more with doubles players that cover well the middle, like serve well. But the covering of the middle is tough on doubles. It's, like, personal because also some doubles players struggle more with singles players.
I think, like, we showed that playing together is a thing. Sometimes is a key factor. We are trying also to develop as a team, like do more strategy on the court. I think today paid off.
Q. Did it feel different out there than a normal mixed doubles match?
SARA ERRANI: It just was a bit shorter. You have to be ready 100%. But, I mean, we played all the other match. When we step on court, we give everything. We had the same energy, same thing like all the other slams. Not many difference.
Q. Andrea, how much do you want your performances to kind of show a message to people how good you are as teams?
ANDREA VAVASSORI: Yeah, honestly we felt a bit before stepping on court our mission was to play this tournament. We were not sure during the year.
Like, for us was important to send a message before the tournament. When we got the wild card, when Erica called me, I was grateful to play. At least there were not so many doubles players.
We are also playing for them. I think it's important to show also that doubles players are great players. I think our main goal in the future will be to change a little bit the narrative because singles players are amazing on singles, but doubles players are amazing in doubles. If doubles player play against singles, sometimes they play better because they are more organized.
I think also we had so many legends in the past that played doubles well, like the Bryans here are completely legends. I think we have also maybe a little bit more in the past to see so many great players that play doubles before, now focus more in the future also, like, in the main stages.
(Stream temporarily frozen.)
ANDREA VAVASSORI: -- we have a chat on WhatsApp. We follow all the men's doubles players. We're trying to be a group, with main goals for the future.
I'm also be part of the players council, so we have two doubles players, Reyes-Varela and Ebden. We're trying to see if we can do something for doubles all together.
All the doubles guys was saying me, You are the only one playing for now, so play also for us a little bit (smiling).
Q. When you were playing these players who don't play a lot of doubles, you're talking after every point, in between the games are you aware and talking about how they don't really know what they're doing, so we need to take advantage of that?
ANDREA VAVASSORI: We love to study the match before, so we always look at the opponents. I looked little bit of our first-round match like yesterday. They just played once in tiebreak tennis in Indian Wells, so the points are not so much. I also studied, like, the players one and one with other teams. We already knew before what was going on court. But we love to speak about tactics also during the match.
Today was not easy, also the second match, because we had to study very, very close by. We were just prepared for the first match. We talk about the second match.
It's great with Sara -- (Stream temporarily frozen.)
Q. You were both somewhat critical of the new format on social media. After having seen it, actually playing it, have you changed any of your opinions that you initially shared about the new format?
ANDREA VAVASSORI: I have to say that as everything, there are always positives and negatives. But the positives are for sure that the stadium was packed in the second match. It's a great thing for doubles to be seen by more people. I have to give them credit.
I also said it before, playing this format is great for doubles and mixed doubles to develop in the future. Like create a tournament with singles stars that are more seen on the tour is a great thing for doubles.
I always say that we need a better job in marketing doubles because if you go to see a sport and you don't know the protagonist of a sport, is impossible. You start to see more the players.
If you, like, create the stories, the big stage, how we create also the teams, maybe be more aware of what is going on on the tour also from the doubles players' side, I think more people will get to also see doubles in the future.
They did amazing for the Bryans. As I said, they were legends. They were winning so much. The people, like, started to love also the doubles game. I think we have to do it more in the future also with the top players of doubles.
SARA ERRANI: Good job (smiling).
Q. What did you think of the energy in the stadium today? How are you feeling about getting to play under the lights --
(Stream temporarily frozen.)
Q. You mentioned the Bryan brothers. What made them so marketable was they basically played every tournament together throughout their career. You're playing more tournaments together. How important is it for doubles teams or players who want to become more marketable to play more tournaments so you can become a fan of Sara and Andrea, not just individuals?
ANDREA VAVASSORI: We are speaking about that. I think it's very important what you mentioned.
But I think if you market the top teams, they always stick to each other because our main goals from the beginning of the season is to arrive at the Masters at the end of the year.
If you follow the top eight teams, they stick to each other. Me and Simone, two years and a half we play together. Our main goal is to arrive to the Finals. A lot of teams, like the best teams, do that. If you want to follow from the beginning of the season, you follow the top eight teams. Then maybe more teams will start to play together for many years.
Is important because like the Bryans were brothers. They just play all the career together. But yeah, it's for sure an important thing. If you change every time, it's not easy to follow the journey.
