Press Conference
ERRANI-VAVASSORI/Collins-Harrison
4-2, 4-2
THE MODERATOR: Danielle, Christian, if you would each give us your thoughts on the match and the competition as a hole.
CHRISTIAN HARRISON: Danielle, ladies first.
DANIELLE COLLINS: Obviously we played against a very experienced team. I think, yeah, they really play well together. They won a lot of trophies. They came out with some good strategy against us. There were some tricky points, close games that kind of got away with us.
I think with this format, too, it makes it a little bit more challenging because a couple of those key opportunities get away and you're behind by more than you want to be. It really can go either way sometimes.
But yeah, I thought the second set we really had some opportunities there to go up. It just didn't go our way, so that's to be expected in tennis.
CHRISTIAN HARRISON: I mean, crazy atmosphere. It was fun. They were flying around the court. We didn't know where to hit it. They came out with some good stuff. I thought we played well the whole week.
Then we had so much fun. Going into the Open next week, Danielle is ready to crush it in the singles. We'll remember this tournament forever.
Thanks for playing, Danielle?
DANIELLE COLLINS: Yeah, it was a special experience. I'm sure it won't be our last time playing together.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. What makes them so difficult to play? Sara's serve is not a strong server and...
DANIELLE COLLINS: I think off of her serve, it's not apparently strong if you're looking at the miles per hour, but she has good placement on the serve. I think that type of ball can really throw people off. She's putting a lot on it, a lot of topspin, a lot of slice, and she mixes her targets well.
I would argue that she actually does a pretty good job with the placement of her serve and it's tricky, for a lot of the guys especially, because the guys don't see that type of serve very often. For the girls, too, we don't see that type of serve too, too often. It is a bit tricky.
Then I think on his side, he does some good things also on the serve. Gets it above our shoulder. We were having to adjust our positions a lot. So I think they're a little bit unorthodox, but that's what makes them so good.
Q. Given the atmosphere, what do you think a night like this could potentially do to inspire more people to play doubles?
CHRISTIAN HARRISON: I mean, of course. I feel like the majority of players that play are playing doubles at the country club, tennis, older crowd I would say. They're not out there trying to play singles.
It's honestly just exposure, it's as simple as that. I mean, the stadium was packed out there. Good atmosphere.
DANIELLE COLLINS: Completely sold out tonight, which is so cool to see for a semifinals in the doubles. Ultimately we want to bring in these crowds. I really think the format of this and what happened this week really said a lot. We had a full atmosphere out here. What a fun environment to play in.
I think a lot of the people watching at home, the doubles fanatics and advocates, love seeing this type of format. Yeah, it's keeping things interesting.
Q. Danielle, what have these whole couple days been like? Last year we weren't sure we were going to see you again, now you're playing in front of 20,000. Life doesn't tell you what's going to happen or something like that.
DANIELLE COLLINS: Yeah, right? What's the saying, man makes plans and God laughs, right?
Yeah, I'm just happy to be here, to have another opportunity to have a really special opportunity to play with one of my best tennis friends.
CHRISTIAN HARRISON: There you go.
DANIELLE COLLINS: Somebody I've been close to over the years means so much. To go out play in front of a full house on my favorite court in the world, it's absolutely spectacular.
I'm going to have some good energy going into the singles. Christian has got doubles coming up. Going to be cheering him on. Yeah, hopefully I can still practice with you and try to get you ready.
CHRISTIAN HARRISON: Always ready. Always ready.
DANIELLE COLLINS: Got to keep him on his toes. I'm good at that (smiling).
Q. Do you think the other majors should adopt this?
CHRISTIAN HARRISON: I mean, honestly you got to wait and see the response to this. This right here was to kind of wait and see so we see where it goes. I don't think anybody really knows right now. Anytime you get a full crowd like this, how can we keep that going? I mean, unreal night. I won't forget this night.
Playing with a good friend, as you said, leaving the court, iconic court, biggest in the world. You're walking off, Billie Jean King is the last one on the court you're seeing. The whole place is named after her. We'll remember this stuff forever. I think this is a positive step for doubles.
Q. Given the different format, getting up for an event like this, get ready again for the singles, how do you think you'll handle the next couple days?
DANIELLE COLLINS: I'm going to need like a day or two off for sure. After my back injury in Cincinnati, I actually only had one practice. I had nine days off. I came into the tournament a little bit cold turkey.
You know what, I played better. I actually thought I played better. I was joking with my coach, maybe I just need to practice less because I feel like the more I play, the worse I get. Maybe less is more for me. I'm serious. Sometimes you play too much and you get worse, especially at this age now.
I'm going to get the feet popped up on the couch, yeah, just kind of chill out with Quincy for the next couple days. Yeah, maybe throw a few practices in there, right, here and there, try to get my back right for the tournament.
I've still been managing this injury. Obviously people can probably tell with the way I was serving a little bit. Yes, a lot of 70 mile-an-hour serves. Not my biggest serving experience. But it was tricky. It was super tricky. I'm full of tricks, so it worked.
THE MODERATOR: Thank you, both.
