US OPEN

August 25, 2025

Daniil Medvedev

New York, New York, USA

Press Conference

B. BONZI/D. Medvedev

6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 0-6, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Can you just explain just the origins of what made you upset with the photographer that came on court and just walk us through what happened.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I was not upset with the photographer. I think nothing special. Every time there is a sound from the stands between the serves, there is never second serve. But, well, it helped me get back into the match.

It was fun moment to live. I was not upset with the photographer. I was upset with the decision.

Q. How much did you just know that you were trying to derail this moment and take up as much time as you could before match point for your opponent?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Honestly, not at all. For sure I was disappointed. I thought he has a match point on his serve. I didn't break him once in the match. I thought I'm losing the match, and okay, it's second serve. I think the referee doesn't say anything. He doesn't say anything. I think he makes the second serve, probably wins the point, and the match is over. He says first serve.

What I say and what I do, in my head, I want to do worse, and I cannot because there are rules, because we're on tennis court. So I just expressed my emotions, my unhappiness with the decision, and then the crowd did what they did without me asking them too much, and it was fun to witness.

Honestly, while living it, I was, like, you know what, it could be fun maybe to finish my career with one match at the US Open.

Q. Is it the end of your career?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Not today, but when I'm finishing my career, you never know where you want to do it. Today I was, like, this could be a nice place to do it.

Q. I'm just wondering, when you were going along, you went on for six minutes encouraging the crowd. How much do you know that you were changing the --

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: At one moment I asked them to stop, but they didn't. I thought, okay, let's try to control them to stop, but they didn't want to stop. So whatever.

He had a moment, like, I think, as you say, six minutes, but one time after three minutes he had a moment he could serve, and then one guy would whistle and he didn't serve. His problem.

Q. Did you just not think that it delayed it enough to make it worth a second serve? I know sometimes in tennis when there's a delay between points, they grant the first serve.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Delay from the photographer was probably four seconds and a half. I'm not sure it's enough for a second serve.

Q. You referenced Reilly talking to the microphone. Why did you do that, and do you think, like --

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I'm getting big fine enough, so if I speak, I'm in big trouble, so I'm not going to speak. Not everyone knows what I talked about when I said Reilly. Reilly got fined big-time for this, so I'm going to get a big fine too.

Q. In general, I'm just curious, obviously this has been a difficult period for you at the slams. What do you feel I guess is lacking from your game right now?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I'm playing bad and in important moments, even worse. Everything. Everything. Serve, return, volley, whatever. Just need to play better, and I'm going to try to do it next year.

Q. How much do you expect to get fined?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I have no idea. They fine guys like me much more than other guys, so...

Actually, I don't know if you know, guys. Is coaching allowed? I have no idea. Because sometimes it is; sometimes not.

Q. I think so.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: He was coached a lot. I hope he gets fined too, but these guys they're going to fine only me.

Kyrgios, me, Bublik. Who else? Reilly. Even if Reilly is a nice guy, and they fine him just because they don't like him.

Q. Do you think you're pushing the lines trying to figure out where the limit is to see if you can defaulted? A lot of different times different tournaments the past couple of years it seems like you're pushing and pushing and pushing and trying to see where the limit is.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Today I didn't do anything bad, no.

Q. You delayed the match for, like, six minutes.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Not me, the crowd.

Q. You were giving them heart emojis and pumping them up.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Heart emojis, I love them. Love New York. They did the work. I didn't do anything. They pushed me to come back into the match.

Yeah, I didn't do anything. I said, Reilly. Whatever I said, I don't even remember, but it was fun for me.
