New York, New York, USA

Press Conference

N. DJOKOVIC/C. Norrie

6-4, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. You said the other day that you were sort of ready for anything. I wonder, how tricky was that when he obviously took the timeout, sometimes he seems to be playing brilliantly, other times he looks like he's maybe not even trying to sort of play on your service games?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, it was a really good match. I think I've seen it before. Yeah, I'm not sure what happened there. I think you'll have to ask him with his back or his hamstring or his foot. I'm not sure what was going on.

But, yeah, it was a tricky match. It was a lot of stops and starts at the beginning, but he served incredibly well, maybe the best he's ever served against me. I was really impressed with that.

Yeah, it was a tough match, and I think when he settled in the third set and he didn't say anything and there was no kind of energy, kind of took my energy, a little bit. The start of the third I started really good, and I think I was a little bit overconfident then and went for a couple, too many big shots, and, yeah, suddenly I was a break down.

Yeah, I was really pleased with the way I was playing the match. Tactically I tried to play a lot of long points. I was moving my forehand around a lot. Had a lot of winners on my forehand side. In the slow night conditions, it was impressive for me.

Q. When you complained to the umpire about the amount of time he was taking between points, do you think it was a deliberate tactic?

CAMERON NORRIE: No, I don't think it was a tactic, but I would have liked to see the umpire be a bit more assertive. It changed nothing for the match.

Yeah, just three or four times I had to wait for him on my serve, and partly I think maybe he was kind of stretching or he was... But it was nothing to do with Novak. I was just asking the umpire what's the rule every time I have to wait for him.

No, it was not really anything there. Then was not a big deal, but I was just asking the question, you know, because typically you play to the server's speed. He didn't tell him once anything. I didn't hear him. Maybe he did. No, it was not a factor in the match at all there.

Q. You get the set, you break him, third set, he's 38, he's had physical issues. Do you think this was your best chance to topple Novak Djokovic?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I think so, but he played so well and he served so well, it was such a good level. I was really impressed with him, and I told him I was impressed with his level when we shook hands.

Yeah, had the break up in the third set, I had to play an insane game to break the serve, I think it was my only breakpoint I had, I took it.

Yeah, I had a couple of game points maybe in that to go 2-Love, and I think I was playing my best level there end of the tiebreak, the start of the third, and I was a little bit overconfident and missed a couple of shots I hadn't been missing, but it won me the set as well playing like that.

It's all in hindsight. Yeah, he played very, very well. Yeah, I just dropped my energy a little bit in the end or midway through that third set, and he ran away with it, and he started the fourth very well.

Yeah, it was a very good match from him. Well done.

Q. That was obviously your first experience of Arthur Ashe. I wonder what you made of it. The court seemed to be quite noisy sometimes.

CAMERON NORRIE: It is. It's like a constant chatter of people talking. So I think in any other court, you would be, like, stopping to play, but you kind of have to be ready to play, and you're, like, it's just a constant noise.

When I was trying to talk to my team a little bit and I couldn't even hear what they were saying. So amazing atmosphere. It's just weird. I had invited some friends to come. I couldn't even find them in the crowd at all.

It's a very big stadium. Like I said before the match, I wouldn't want to be doing anything else on my Friday night playing against him. And I enjoyed the match a lot. I was really happy with my level. There's always some moments in the match that could have gone better, but I gave it everything, and I played my game of tennis, and it was good fun out there.

Q. Talking about Novak's level, he's obviously on this quest for No. 25. Do you think he has the level to do that, to potentially beat Alcaraz and/or Sinner to win it here?

CAMERON NORRIE: I think he has the level. Yes, the way he served today was, well, crazy. Especially at the beginning.

But I think that the question lies physically. I mean, you can ask him just after me here, and see. But I think his tennis level, I was really impressed with it today. I was playing so well this tournament, feeling the ball well.

Yeah, he managed the match extremely well. Yeah, my level is a different level to Charlie and to Sinner, and to do that back to back is a different kind of challenge.

I'm not sure, I think physically is the main thing. Depends on how he's feeling after this match. He stopped the match for the physio, he was calling the doctor. I'm not sure. You have to ask him.

Q. I think as you said, your forehand was really impressive today and pretty dominant at times. How much confidence does that give you going forward to kind of make such damage against Novak the way you did today with it?

CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I think I couldn't hit the forehand cross any better and I was getting no value for it into his backhand side. And then, yeah, I was switching line to his forehand side very, very well in the second set and getting a lot of free points. Then he was trying to cheat over.

Yeah, I was feeling it. I was very accurate. I had to be accurate with it. And I think always when I play these top players like Rafa in the past or Novak, I feel it's like a different kind of level, you know, playing against them and I always play so, so well straight after these tournaments, you know, obviously you're getting a lot of reps in. So to play against these top guys and to see what they can bring point in and point out, it's definitely a different level.

So I can take a lot of confidence in this, as well, for sure.
