I. SWIATEK/A. Kalinskaya
7-6, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Iga, your thoughts on tonight.
IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, well, for sure it wasn't the easy match, especially after the beginning. I'm happy that I came back and started playing better, because for sure I did some mistakes in the beginning of the first set that I wish didn't happen. Also, Anna played great.
Yeah, I'm happy that I came back and kept being positive and, like, figuring out and problem-solving.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Physically are you feeling okay? Just because it was a long time between match point and getting here tonight.
IGA SWIATEK: Um...
Q. No treatment, special treatments, anything like that?
IGA SWIATEK: (Shaking head.)
Q. No? Anyway, in the first set what helped you flip the switch at 5-1 to get back into the set?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, honestly, I feel like I played good, but I did some mistakes when I wanted to kind of close the rally. When the ball was easier I played too long sometimes. So I knew there's not like a lot I need to change. But for sure, I wanted to keep the margins, I guess, to not make unforced errors.
I focused on, like, two technical things that I figured out might help me. It started out being a bit better. I made less mistakes and also gave her a chance to make some mistakes, and then the set got tied, so I knew I can just fight for it when we were even with the score.
Q. In a situation like that, how clearly are you thinking, like, on the court when obviously there might be reasons to be frustrated?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, it depends. You know, sometimes, and at some point today as well, I felt like I don't know what to change, you know. But then my team helped me a bit. Then we were at the point where you just don't have other choice to, like, I don't know, yeah, keep the margins and try to put one more ball in. Maybe not go for the winner.
So it's not easy sometimes to find the solutions and to find the exact thing that will help you. So it takes some time sometimes.
But yeah, for sure you need to have your mind open enough to think about what can you do. Today was a pretty good day, I would say, in terms of that, because, you know, at 5-1 or something, it's easy to panic, and I didn't. So that's good.
Q. You also in the first set, your first-serve percentage was pretty low, I think it was 36%. Was that in the back of your mind when the point starts or were you able to play freely without it?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, usually it is, but I don't know why, I kind of hadn't noticed today. I already got asked about this. And yeah, I didn't notice that my serve was, service percentage was low. Sometimes I felt like I was maybe going too much for it, like, maybe risking it in terms of picking the spots.
So I guess I tried to work on that, and on one hand, like, played more safe, but on the other hand, you can't do that because your opponent will use it. So I tried to balance that. I had no idea what the percentage was, and maybe that's good (smiling).
