Jannik Sinner

New York, New York, USA

Press Conference

J. SINNER/A. Bublik

6-1, 6-1, 6-1

THE MODERATOR: Jannik, congratulations. Dominating performance. Questions.

Q. Jannik, you can only beat what's in front of you, but do you think the 23,000 fans deserved better from Alexander Bublik out there? 13 double faults, two underarm serves, one of the double faults.

JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, I don't know. You know, I just try, you know, from my side. So from my point of view to make the best, you know, what I can, you know, in that day.

Sometimes, you know, we have days off where certain things doesn't work. Some players, they have some problems behind the scenes, you never know.

At the end of the day, we try to make the sport as interesting as possible. You know, at times I felt like today I was playing some great tennis, and I managed to break him very early, which then, you know, it gave me then the confidence to serve, you know, a little bit better and play from the back of the court a bit better.

It was a faster, or a fast match, you know. But in the same time, you know, from my point of view, it's good, you know. Obviously people come here to see some great tennis matches, some great battles, and not always that's the case.

But yeah, I mean, I don't know what he said. I don't know if he was in here, but, you know, I can just judge from my point of view and then how I managed to play, and then it was a good performance from my side.

Q. It sounded like at the net after the match he told you, I'm not actually that bad. How did you make him look that bad?

JANNIK SINNER: No, I don't know (smiling). As I said, you know, we don't have to forget that he had a five-set match and it finished very late, you know, against Tommy, is a different player. You know, it can happen. You know, this is the sport.

Some days there are good, and some days there are not good. Maybe I have a day where things don't work, and then I lose easy. You know, you never know what's happening. It's very unpredictable the sport.

As I said, you know, I tried to move him around, trying to see how he moves, trying to put it more on the physical side. Today I played some good tennis at times. At times, you know, he gave me some free points. I just tried to stay as consistent as possible, and I think that today was maybe the main key.

Q. In your next match, you play your countryman, of course. When he was in here, he said playing you is the biggest challenge in this sport but maybe the pressure is more on you because of the standard that you have to uphold. What do you make of that, and what do you think of the challenge of facing him?

JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, I mean, pressure is there. Pressure has always been there (smiling).

It's going to be very interesting to see obviously. It's a bit different when you play the same, or from me being Italian playing against another Italian, they are always a bit different matches. But in the same time, he's an amazing player, very, very talented. He is playing some great tennis.

He has struggled a bit, you know, during the season, but now he finds himself in an amazing form and shape. Yeah, you know, the pressure is on me, you know. But in the same time, you know, most of the times the pressure is a little bit more me than on the opponent, so let's see what's coming.

I like these challenges. It's great from an Italian point of view to have, for sure, an Italian playing the semis of a Grand Slam.

Now these things seem normal, but they are not normal. It's very difficult to get to these stages, quarters. The occasion is getting bigger, the attention is getting bigger, the matches are bigger. Everything changes now. So let's see.

But I'm looking forward to it. It's a great challenge, and I'm looking forward to it.

Q. Speaking more broadly, you and Carlos seem to have a really healthy rivalry. What do you think kids and other fans can learn from your rivalry with Carlos and how to foster healthy rivalry in their own lives?

JANNIK SINNER: I think that we have a good friendship also off the court. It's something great to see. We see that this is possible, you know. It's not like you have to be enemies also off the court. Of course we are enemies when we step on the court. We try to play our best tennis, but it ends there. After the handshake, everything is fine again.

That's great to see. You know, we have great teams around us. We have, you know, also a normal life outside of tennis, which means he loves to play golf. You know, I have my passions. You know, we, in the same time, we practice very hard. We have the team which supports us, who is very honest with us.

But I think many players are like this. You know, tennis is very important, and it depends also how much you are able to sacrifice for the sport because you have to.

But yeah, I think it's nice just to be, one thing is to be a good tennis player; the other one is to be a good person. Two different things. I think we have both a little bit. So it's good.

Q. I wanted to ask about an event you did last year with Alfie Hewett at the Miami Open, the wheelchair tennis demonstration. Curious how that came to be and how important those events are to enhance the appreciation and awareness of wheelchair tennis?

JANNIK SINNER: Well, I'm a huge fan of wheelchair. Amazing, amazing athletes. It's unbelievable. How they are behind the scenes, you cannot know. But they are super, super kind. It's amazing to see, and I was very lucky and honored that I could try wheelchair tennis for a small amount of time, you know, when I was there with him in Miami.

It was great, you know. It shows how difficult this is, and it's amazing what they can do with their bodies. For us, you know, it's all normal, but it's not. It's amazing what they can do.

Yeah, I hope in this sport wheelchair gets as big as it can, you know, because I feel like, you know, to watch matches like this, it's very nice. I watched some matches in Australia a couple years ago. It's amazing. I'm a big supporter of them.

Q. You mentioned on your on-court interview how good it was to play at night. Is that just because it was your first night match this year on Ashe and there's the whole energy of the nighttime crowd or was it more to do with conditions and what it offered your game playing instead of in the day?

JANNIK SINNER: In any case, it's always special to go on Ashe to play. Night matches, they are a bit different because there is a bit more attention, I feel like. It's a different vibe, you know, also around the court. It's very loud, you know. It's also different to play.

So it was the first time for me this year, and it was nice. You have obviously the good and the bad if you play in the evening. So it is very special and you feel very, you know, privileged to step on court in a nighttime on the biggest court we have.

And, yeah, so conditions, today it was a bit warmer. When it's a bit colder in the evening, it's again very different to play, you know.

Yeah, that's it.
