Press Conference
J. SINNER/F. Auger-Aliassime
6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Jannik, congratulations. Making the finals. Well done. Questions, please.
Q. Just firstly, are you able to update us on the injury and why you left the court, what the nature of the issue was?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, I just felt a small twitching after a serve when I served there in the second set on 4-3. After the treatment, was feeling much, much better.
At some point I didn't feel anything anymore. I was serving back to normal pace, so it was all good. Nothing to worry about.
But I preferred to go off court because it's on a different spot. So it's all good.
Q. Was it the stomach?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, the stomach.
Q. Just on Carlos, you've played each other -- well, you will have played each other in the last five tournaments where you've been at the same event. You're bumping into each other at restaurants. Is there ever any point where you'll get sick of seeing him, being around him?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, on court we like to see each other, you know, because it means that considering our ranking, it means that we are doing well in the tournament.
Off court we bump into each other at times. I don't know if we are happy or not (smiling), but no, I think it's great. As I always say, we have a great relationship also off the court, and everything is fine, you know, between him and me and also all teams. You know, my team and their team, we are just working hard, but in the same time we are also normal, normal people.
It's great. So, yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
Q. Jannik, what would you say are the biggest improvements that he's made in his game over the last couple of years and that you've made in your game over the last couple of years?
JANNIK SINNER: He has improved a lot the serve. I feel like he's serving much better with the better pace, but the percentage is very high all the time. Much more solid, you know, for example, because maybe before there were more ups and downs. Now he's very consistent.
Also, if you watch all the tournaments, he's going very, very far. So many, many improvements, you know. But I always say that when you are young, you know, one year or two years, they make big difference.
I feel the same with me. The serving has gotten better. You know, my net game, it has improved. It's not there yet where I would love to, but we are working on it. And also the movement, like the physical shape is better. Back in the days I was maybe struggling a little bit if we go three, four sets. Now I feel fine.
Yeah, I think, you know, we improve.
Q. Roger Federer was asked many years ago when he and Rafael Nadal kept playing each other in finals, Do you like the challenge of that, or would you rather be facing somebody else? He basically said, What, are you kidding? Obviously I would rather play somebody easier than to keep playing Rafa. I'm curious, same question for you. Do you like meeting up with Carlos time and time again and the challenge of that and trying to figure out how to beat each other, or is it kind of time, like, okay, let me play somebody different in a Grand Slam final?
JANNIK SINNER: Well, I mean, yes and no. You know, that's what Roger said. I feel like we all think the same way, but you know, I love these challenges. I love to put myself in these positions.
You know, he's someone who pushed me to limit, which is great, because then you have the best feedback you can have as a player. We have faced each other quite a lot now lately, so you know, things are getting a little bit different.
Always when we step on court, we are aware of maybe more things, because him or me, we try to prepare the match tactically and in different ways, so yeah. But sometimes it's also nice to not play, you know, against him (smiling).
It's nice, but as I always said, it's great for the sport having rivalries, having hopefully great matches in front of us. And then we see. I'm someone who loves these challenges, and I love to put myself in these positions and to see how it goes.
Q. Jannik, there's lots of great numbers that you've produced. Five straight major finals, all four majors this year, and there was another one, 27 hard court slam wins in a row. I'm not sure how much attention you pay to the stats, but are there any of those that you are most proud of or that you like the sound of the most? Because only a few people have done that.
JANNIK SINNER: Well, amazing stats. You know, I would have never thought that I would make this when I turned pro, and now I find myself here. So it's amazing.
I think, you know, five straight Grand Slam finals, it's something great. The consistency and putting myself there in the later stages of the biggest tournaments we have, it's amazing, no. But in the same time, I know it's in the back of my head, whatever I'm doing, but in the same time whatever is done is done.
I'm here. I have a very important day Sunday, and then we see.
