US OPEN

September 6, 2025

Tokito Oda

New York, New York, USA

Press Conference

T. ODA/G. Fernandez

6-2, 3-6, 7-6

THE MODERATOR: Congratulations. Your thoughts on the match.

TOKITO ODA: Yeah, after match I got too emotional, but now I can speak, like, normally. Yeah, I feeling just amazing, just happy. Yeah, I got no word.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. What a thrilling tiebreak that was. I believe you saved four match points. Tell me how did you stay calm? He was playing great. How did you get through that when he had all those match points?

TOKITO ODA: Yeah, I didn't know I saved that four, his match point, but I saved already, I don't know, 20 match points in my career (smiling).

I didn't think I, if I lose this point, I didn't thought like that. Just through normal, and every point my mind is always same and always just hit the winner and just hit for the corner, yeah.

So, you know, I feel a little bit of pressure in his match point, but yeah, that time I got two winner maybe down the line. Yeah, that was the best moment.

Q. 19, and you just won the Golden Slam. How are you feeling about that? What does it mean? You're technically the fourth to do it in wheelchair singles. Yeah.

TOKITO ODA: I don't think I was too young, you know. I came here step by step. I didn't do, like, too the big step. Yeah, maybe I jump up to the next level, but after I spend every day and I practicing every day and I build my career.

So I was surprised today's win, but you know, this result is what I imagined every day before now after the Wimbledon.

I was imagining this trophy and to win here and how to celebrate on the court, yeah. But match was maybe craziest match of my career. Even bigger than the Paralympic games. That was one years before tomorrow, or today maybe. It's been one year since that day. Yeah, I just too emotional right now.

Q. With such a huge accomplishment of the Golden Slam, how are you going to celebrate after this victory?

TOKITO ODA: Eat sushi and some Japanese food in Japan, like a real one. I don't know. I just go back to home. I just want to meet my family. They love me, and I love them. My brother and sister and, yeah, everybody. I want to meet with everybody in Japan.

Q. I think this US Open is going to be more memorable for you, not just only because you became the youngest-ever Golden Slam winner in female and male, and first time break-through in the doubles, you won with Gustavo, your opponent. How are you going to find the motivation? You won everything, the youngest-ever Golden Slam winner. I think it's going to be difficult to find some motivation after this for next year and the next couple.

TOKITO ODA: My motivation is to play in the stadium. My journey is not going to stop until I play in the stadium like normally. It's not like for celebrate or something. Just normally I play in the stadium. If I play there, I can make them, make the audience to enjoy the matches. I have confidence for that (laughing), yeah.

It just now, you know, wheelchair tennis is, maybe as a sport, it just started in, I don't know, two years. So now I learn everything, and I just looking forward to show our sports to make the audience and make some fans. I got a lot of things to do for myself and for, I want to do for this, my sports, yeah.

So maybe that's my motivation.
