United States Quick Quotes
Q. Talk about what your team just accomplished.
NATHAN SMITH: I'm just blown away. They showed up all weekend, in both singles matches in the afternoon, and I don't know if I've ever seen a Walker Cup team bring it like they did this afternoon in singles.
Q. What was it like for you today to watch all this unfold knowing you could only do so much; it was in their hands?
NATHAN SMITH: It was kind of a feeling of helplessness, but then I saw how they were playing, and I just kind of found a shady tree and it's kind of the coach, you don't want to call any time-outs, just get out of the way and let the horses run.
Q. I know Bryson showed up yesterday and today; what did he say to these guys that you think maybe got some motivation going?
NATHAN SMITH: Well, I think just him showing up in general means so much to us, the Walker Cup alumni and everything, and he gave him a pump-up speech last night, which they loved, and got them going. 36 is a long day, so they were ready to play today.
Q. How would you describe the personality of this team all together?
NATHAN SMITH: What do you think? I think it's a fun group of guys. It's been a great group of guys. I think I said in the team room softly to these guys, everybody brings something unique to this team, and they do. It's a special group of guys, and I'm honored to be their captain.
Q. I know you're proud of each and every one of them, but what were some of the moments that stood out to you today where you were really particularly blown away?
NATHAN SMITH: I just think there's so many. Even in the morning, so many matches flipped and everything, and mason holing out, and then the afternoon, you just look up there and there's just red all over the board. I couldn't believe it. I had to kind of do a double check and just stay away from it. It was pretty special. They're all special. I'm very fortunate.
Q. For you, as somebody who has competed in so many USGA championships, to be standing here as a winning Walker Cup captain, what does this mean to you?
NATHAN SMITH: It's really beyond words. Like I was just saying, to be with this group of guys that I love so much and then be on the 16th tee at Cypress Point, it's hard to even put words into it. I'm so blessed, fortunate and humble.
