Q. Jon, not your best stuff, but you grinded it out. How much different is your mindset in match play than stroke play?
JON RAHM: In match play, you kind of have to make decisions a lot of times based on what your opponent is doing. So you can pick and choose how aggressive you are. If you go on the first, you kind of want to keep the pressure on. It's not always the easiest.
You said it, neither Phil or I had our best today but managed. I think today came down to a bit of fortune. I got a couple of lucky breaks, he got a couple of bad ones. It ended up being the deciding factor.
Q. Phil obviously one of my idols growing up in San Diego. I know he's been a great mentor to you through ASU and now as a pro. How satisfying is it to beat one of the all-time greats?
JON RAHM: I was thinking earlier today he's been a professional at this sport longer than I've been alive. It's scary to go against someone like that who's actually been driving it really straight this year, had a great day yesterday, has been playing really good. I didn't have my best stuff yesterday, so I was definitely feeling a little bit of pressure.
Just coming down the stretch, even making that putt, it's emotional. He's such a good friend. You never want to beat a friend. In a weird way, it feels good because Phil and I have a fun rivalry going. It's a weird feeling, but proud of myself and how I fought today.
Q. Not a lot of smack talk going on, I noticed that. Normally it would be at home.
JON RAHM: There was only one point of maybe smack talk when he had to hit that 2 1/2 footer on 11. I told him, you didn't give me the one on 10. I didn't give you that one. We're even. Let's not do any more funny business, and that was it. That's the only things we really said to each other.
