U.S. SENIOR WOMEN'S OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

August 22, 2025

Laura Diaz

Chula Vista, California, USA

San Diego Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Can you walk me through your round?

LAURA DIAZ: Yeah, so I started with a birdie on 10, which was my first hole, and followed it up with a bogey, so that wasn't very good.

Then I made a couple birdies, and the back nine was my front nine, and I was able to get it up-and-down when I needed and then make some putts for birdie.

I said to my son on the third hole, 12, I said, oh, we've already made twice as many birdies as we made yesterday, so that was good.

Then the front nine, which was my back nine, I needed to get it up-and-down a couple times, and I did, just nine straight pars, kind of boring but exciting at the same time.

Q. What part of your game do you think really stood out?

LAURA DIAZ: Today, putting. I was able to chip it into the right places that freed me up a little bit to have the ability to putt more aggressively than yesterday. I think most of us would say below the hole at this particular Open is better, so I had uphill putts and just made me a lot less tentative than I was yesterday.

Q. What's your strategy as you head into the weekend?

LAURA DIAZ: Just boring, take it one shot at a time, play what the course gives me. I put myself in some rough today, but take what you get and roll with the punches, not get too upset. Just trying to give myself as many chances as I can.

Q. This is your first U.S. Senior Women's Open?

LAURA DIAZ: This is my first, yes. I turned 50 in April.

Q. How has your experience been with the difficulty? Is it rising to your expectations?

LAURA DIAZ: Yes. I haven't played a U.S. Open since, I think, 2015 was my last regular Open, and I love the U.S. Open. It's probably my favorite championship of all of them. When I turned 45, I could not wait five more years to turn 50. It's the only thing that made me want to turn 50, so I'm truly, like, so excited to be here and just trying to enjoy every moment of it.

Q. Can you talk about your hat a little bit, who you're playing for?

LAURA DIAZ: Sure, Lizzy, Liz Bowman. I didn't know her tremendously well, but I'm very good friends with Jill McGill, and she was one of her best friends. So I'm honored to wear the hat in her name.

We had our own tragedy two years ago with a good friend of ours that we lost to leukemia, so I totally believe cancer sucks, and I'm happy to wear this in honor of her. I hope that she's shining down on us with every shot we all hit.
