Quick Quotes
Q. Here with Gaby Lopez after her first round at the CPKC Women's Open. 66 today. Just an awesome back nine. Talk about it a little bit.
GABY LOPEZ: Yeah, I feel that I've been transferring those feelings from my golf swing from last week to the golf course, and got off to a rusty start and wasn't exactly super clean.
On the back nine I just feel that I was making really good, committed swings and I ended up hitting it super close, so it was a couple easy birdies when it's two or three feet from the hole.
Q. Can you talk a little bit about those feelings that you were saying that you brought into this week. Can you describe it a little bit?
GABY LOPEZ: Yeah, pretty much the same thing we been working all year. Just tendencies when you're tired or when you feel weak. So I feel that just resting two weeks at home and kind of grinding and those feelings, kind of having the club decision in a good space in your swing and just be aggressive with it, yeah.
Q. Would you say you're a feel player?
GABY LOPEZ: Yeah, I feel that it's really good combo between just putting some analysis in your swing, but at the same time it's our job to transfer it into a feeling. I feel that sometimes we get caught up so much in positions or swing prison. That's what one of my mental coaches says. He's always, hey, don't let that swing prison take away the feel you have as an athlete.
Q. Can you talk about what you like about this course? I don't know if you played here before.
GABY LOPEZ: Yeah, no, this is my first time. Honestly I feel that Canada does such an amazing job with the tournament, the setup. We always play amazing golf courses. I feel like the north part of the country in the U.S. and Canada just offer so much green golf courses and trees, and I just feel that it's a great challenge out here.
Q. And anything fun you did off the golf course the last two weeks?
GABY LOPEZ: Anything fun?
Q. Megan Khang bought a house.
GABY LOPEZ: Yeah, no. I probably bought the stock market. Yeah, no, honestly, it's just been fun to be around with my family and just have some time off. Coming back from Europe, because I was in Europe for five weeks, I really wanted to get back into a routine of being able to eat clean and go to sleep early. Being able to do that for two weeks was really nice.
Q. Really solid round.
GABY LOPEZ: Thank you.
Q. Broadly what was working for you today?
GABY LOPEZ: I feel that once you kind of get momentum and just feel that you put one good swing and another swing and just stay in the present, I think that was important for me when it's super windy. It was -- coming down the stretch it was two or three clubs more from a normal shot.
So, yeah, being able to stay in the moment and really good, committed swings.
Q. There was some really big galleries on the course today. What were the fans like for you today?
GABY LOPEZ: Yeah, they were awesome. I feel that Canada is a community itself. They are such a welcoming and warm community and they're so amazing to us, the players. I mean, I remember the first time I played the Canadian Amateur Championship and I was just so amazed about the people and just the golf.
I feel that Canadians appreciate a lot golf, and they know when to clap. When it's not even that close to the pin, you know, they know it's a good shot. So, yeah, I feel that it's awesome to play out here.
