Q. Your first competitive round at The Belfry. Finished with a 5-under 67. A good day's work.

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, it was good, a good start to the tournament. Just felt like I played really solid. Sort of a bit of a ropey start, to get maybe a couple putts early goes to making the round. But after that, really felt like I've hit the ball well and done everything right.

Q. Haven't played in this championship since 2018. One of the reasons you're here is to impress Luke Donald and try to secure one of those six wildcard picks. How important do you think your play over the next two weeks is going to be to that quest?

MATT FITZPATRICK: I've done a lot of good stuff in the summer that I'm sure he's seen as well, and hopefully that makes the majority of it. This week obviously is another opportunity to play well, and like you said, that's why I'm here, to do that. And then obviously to get off to a good start is always nice and hopefully keep on.

Q. Describe to us just how much you want to be on that team.

MATT FITZPATRICK: I mean, I don't think I need to. I think everyone at home knows what Ryder Cup means. It means the world to be part of it. It's normally the first thing -- outside of winning a major, it's the first thing on a goal sheet at the start of every year of a Ryder Cup.

So, for me, I obviously want to be there. It's a great opportunity to do something that's not been done in a long time, and to be part of that would be special.
