Caves Valley Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Denny, just a recap of the week in general. How was it playing sort of at home?

DENNY McCARTHY: Yeah, it's always fun to play in front of a home crowd. It wasn't the result I was looking for this week. I felt like I played better golf than what the score shows. Unfortunately I shot myself in the foot yesterday a little bit and was just too much to overcome today. Would have obviously needed something pretty special today.

I played a pretty good round of golf today outside of making a triple bogey. I shot 2-under and made a triple, so proud of the way I hung in there and fought through the week.

Q. You've always been a guy that's never given up, so that must have been satisfying to come out and play the way you did today.

DENNY McCARTHY: Yeah, unfortunately it doesn't really get me anywhere, but yeah, I try and take pride in every round of golf that I play, and proud of how I -- last night was tough, kind of realizing that I probably didn't have much of a chance today. I hung in there pretty nicely yesterday. Got off to a bad start and hung in there and then made a mess of 15 and 16, and like I said, shot myself in the foot.

Kind of disappointing to end up in this kind of spot for the third or fourth year in a row, not having the opportunity to go play next week.

Q. You mentioned you were sitting there thinking about it last night. When you're in that situation knowing there's not much at stake for you, that you're kind of out of it, how do you psych yourself up or prepare yourself to go out -- do you set a goal of some sort?

DENNY McCARTHY: I tried to come out and play really free and come out with the mindset that I'm going to birdie every hole. It's just really hard to do out here. I wasn't giving myself a ton of really good birdie looks. I did give myself some today. The greens just have so much slope in them, and the greens are so fast. You've got to hit it really close to give yourself some straightforward putts so you can hit good shots and still have a really difficult 15-footer, more difficult than I'm used to, a putt that is really fast breaking one way and breaks the other way at the hole. To make a bunch of those throughout a day is tough.

But yeah, it was tough last night. My wife and I went to a really good restaurant. We had a really nice bite of food. We had a bunch of good things, so that put me in a better mood, so I tried to come out and have fun with it today even though the chances were slim to move on to next week.

Q. A highlight probably would have been the eagle at 16. Walk us through that.

DENNY McCARTHY: Yeah, I got a little bit of revenge from yesterday. I made a triple bogey there yesterday. Had a bit of fun in front of the green for three or four shots. It was nice to just take one shot and put it in the hole from there. It would have been useful yesterday.

Q. Where did you go to dinner last night?

DENNY McCARTHY: We went to Thames Street Oyster House. Very good.

Q. You stayed downtown here close --

DENNY McCARTHY: Yeah, I stayed at the Pendry this week. It was nice to kind of -- I hadn't really spent much time in downtown Baltimore, so it was nice to treat it like a normal week and spend some time in Baltimore. I went to some really good restaurants, and the food last night was amazing. It put me in a good mood.

Q. What was it like being the local guy back here --

DENNY McCARTHY: Yeah, it was a really good experience. Anytime you can play in front of a home crowd, it's a lot of fun. It was really hot this week, and the support I had, the amount of people I had coming out and sticking it out with me in the heat, I don't know if I would come out and walk four rounds in this heat and watch someone play golf, so the amount of people that came out to do that for me was really special.
