Quick Quotes
Q. Okay, here with Caroline Masson after her opening round at the Portland Classic. Hole-in-one today. Talk about the shot, what your club choice was, and if you saw it go in.
CAROLINE MASSON: Yeah, it was on No. 2. The pin was actually a little bit behind the bunker so couldn't see it go in. Can't quite see the hole from there. Hit a really small 7-iron and I pulled it just a little bit.
My first reaction was like, uh-uh, and then it took off right at the pin. Eventually people were cheered that were up by the green, so...
A little bit surprising because sometimes I feel like you hit a good shot and you're like, go in, go in. It didn't even cross my mind that it could possibly go in, so it was surprising and really fun.
Q. What was the reaction from your playing competitors? Any jumping or cheering?
CAROLINE MASSON: No. Everybody was just like, oh, wow, kind of surprised. So, yeah, my caddie and I were like I can't believe that just happened.
Q. How many hole-in-ones have you had?
CAROLINE MASSON: That was my third. Yeah, the last one was a long time ago. I actually remember it really well because it came the year after I won in Canada, the ManuLife. The year after I made a hole-in-one and my mom was there, so it was really cool. So a special place for me, and then having my mom there. It's been a while since then. Nine years; about time.
Q. That's awesome. As part of your hole-in-one there will be money donated to St. Jude. What does that mean to hear you were able to contribute?
CAROLINE MASSON: Yeah, that's awesome. I love that. It's a great cause. I think we see it a lot in golf and for us players to do something and be able to contribute to that is awesome. Yeah, I'm very excited about it.
Q. Just overall your round, what kind of momentum do you think the hole-in-one gave you? You rattled off a lot of birdies after that.
CAROLINE MASSON: Yeah, it was a good time I think. Kind of got me back under par which on this golf course you always feel like you want to gain on it and just keep under par and make more birdies.
Bogeyed the next hole after that. Actually made a good bogey. Then after that really settled down and just played pretty solid. Made a few good putts, good birdies coming in.
Yeah, just, you know, it wasn't the perfect round of golf. There is things I can do a little bit better the next three days. Overall my scoring was good and my putting was there. Coming off quite a few weeks of not playing golf it was fun today.
Q. I believe this is your best round since last year, a 64 here, too.
CAROLINE MASSON: Yeah.
Q. What is it about this golf course? Does it suit your eye?
CAROLINE MASSON: I've always loved it. I think I loved it from the first time I came here in my rookie year. You know, I think you have to hit it straight and it feels look you can just go at the pins.
When you do hit good shots you get it close, and when you do hit good putts you got to make them. So just knowing that and that if I execute I think I can shoot a good score and a lot of birdies. It kind of suits my eye.
But it's also a course where if you kind of start hitting it sideways a little bit it would bite you until the butt. Got to just keep me head down and improve the things that weren't as good today and just keep going.
Q. Are you going to call Benton after this? Does he know what hole-in-one is?
CAROLINE MASSON: I don't know. I don't think it's an camera so we can't show him. I'm definitely going to tell him about it. Hopefully one day he'll understand.
