AIG WOMEN'S OPEN

August 1, 2025

Lauren Coughlin

Rest Bay, Porthcawl, Wales, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Well done on the last two holes to get yourself into the weekend.

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Thank you.

Q. Tell me a little bit about how you did that.

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, I mean, 17 was playing pretty downhill, and I mean, I hit 5-hybrid off the tee and went almost 250 yards. And then I played for it to kind of bounce up short of the green because, again, it's so downwind and everything and it's really starting to firm up.

Then I made about a 35-footer that kind of hit back the cup and went up in the air a little bit and went down in.

Yeah, and then played up just short right of the green and got up and down for birdie on 18.

Q. Were you aware of the number?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: I figured 1 would be good but probably was going to go to 2. I just knew how windy it was going to get this afternoon and how tough this golf course can get when it's that windy.

So I kind of knew just because that's the number I kind of had in my head, but I didn't know until I asked my caddie if I was good or not.

Q. Did it play today significantly harder than yesterday do you think?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, I definitely think so. I was relatively early yesterday, like 8:20, and it wasn't super windy. I mean, it was windy, but nothing like we had in the practice rounds when I played in the afternoon.

Yeah, I think it played a lot tougher. Just some of the holes super into the wind play very long and so many cross bunkers that you just don't want to get into.

Yeah, so I kind of figured it was going to play pretty tough this afternoon.

Q. Winning the Scottish last year, that gave a bump up in your confidence obviously. When you come to play links courses you can say, I've conquered this; I can do it.

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, I was telling my caddie, Jason, because we have only been working together for about four weeks now, a few years ago was the only time I ever played in this type of wind and I really, really struggled. I feel like it was a weakness in my game, playing in the wind.

So that next year I made it a big goal to just get better at playing in the wind, not fighting it as much, and letting the wind -- knowing when to let the wind do its thing and when to try to keep it under or whatever.

Just picking and choosing and having the kind of shots that if I need to keep it down and out of the wind I can, which I didn't really have before.

Yeah, winning obviously the Scottish last year was like really, really cool just because it had been something I had been working on for a long time. Not to master the wind but get pretty good at it.

Q. Someone is at 11 under.

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah.

Q. Are they uncatchable?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: No. I think it's really tough off the tee, this golf course. If you can hit it in the fairway it's not crazy difficult. Obviously she shot like what, 7-under today? Yeah, I mean, I know she was out in the morning when it wasn't quite as windy.

Still, that's playing your golf ball out here. But I wouldn't say she's unattainable at the moment, but you have to play really, really good golf on the weekend.
