Press Conference
B. BENCIC/E. Bouchard
6-2, 3-6, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Genie, the microphone is yours to just talk about your emotions tonight after an incredible career.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Thank you. Yeah, it was such a special night and a special week in general here in Montreal. I'm glad I was able to play some decent tennis on the court and just absorb all the special emotional moments with the fans, with my family and friends who are here. It's just kind of a perfect ending for me.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English, please.
Q. So you just took the world No. 20 three sets. Are you sure you should retire?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Everyone keeps asking me that. My sister said she started a petition with fans in the crowd, and everyone signed it, so now I have no choice but to rescind my retirement.
But there's a lot of hard work that goes into tennis. It was great to be able to perform well, but you know, it's such a tough life of sacrifice and hard work. I've given so much to tennis, and it's given me so much, but I do feel ready to move on from that and do other things in life, but I will forever be grateful for what tennis has given me.
Q. So then just how fulfilling was it to go out this way?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Yeah, like I said on court, I've always had a feeling I would end my career here. Just makes sense. Montreal is where I was born and raised, so it just feels right. Yeah, just an emotional moment.
I think I just wanted a moment like this because my career kind of deserved a moment like this is what I felt like. I really think I got it tonight, and I'm so grateful for that.
Q. Except for what you've just done, like pickleball and TV commentating, is there any immediate plan that you want to share?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Maybe a vacation (laughing). I look forward to sleeping in tomorrow.
Yeah, I mean, I want to give myself the opportunity to have space and time to really reflect on what I want to do and have that time to be open to opportunities.
I've always said I feel like I missed out because I didn't go to college and didn't go to school, so that could be an option as well. Diving into the TV stuff more is definitely something I enjoy, so that's a probable next step.
Yeah, I mean, are any of you guys hiring (laughing)? I don't know how to even write -- what do you even call it when you --
THE MODERATOR: Résumé.
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: I don't even have one of those. Maybe my agent can come up with one for me. I'm not used to doing that.
Q. Why do you think your career deserved a moment like this? I guess on that note, what do you think your legacy is, and how do you hope you'll be remembered?
EUGENIE BOUCHARD: Well, I think just giving a moment to my fans. I think my fans have really respected and appreciated the hard work I gave to tennis and also the time I spent with them, so to kind of give that back and give them a chance if they wanted to watch me play another time.
For me, also personally to enjoy another moment in front of everyone. Again, my fans, but also family and friends. Yeah, I just hope, I don't know, to be remembered hopefully by a lot of great things, but most importantly, being a good person, giving back as much as I received. Tennis has given me so, so much.
On the court, being a good player, being a fighter. I hope I showed that in the last couple of matches. So, yeah, those are probably the qualities I would like.
