Washington D.C.

Quick Quotes

A. de MINAUR/A. Davidovich Fokina

5-7, 6-1, 7-6

Q. Tough match. How did the match go in your opinion? Can you walk through the match in the first set and the second and third, please.

ALEJANDRO DAVIDOVICH FOKINA: Well, I knew it was going to be a tough match against Alex. He put a lot of balls in, and I knew I have to be on his level from the beginning. How I said, he put a lot of balls from the beginning, and I knew that I have to be calm and dangerous.

The first set was so tight for both. We had our chances to break, and maybe was a little bit lucky me at the end of the set.

In the second set he was better than me. He was more solid. Me, I was a little bit out mentally, a little bit not feeling good, because he was very strong.

But I knew in the third set it was going to be another battle. I was very, very high, and my fitness physically and mentally, I was very high. I knew it was going to be very tough for him to play against me in the third set.

Well, another day, another unlucky day, but I'm happy how I played, how I did my things, and, well, I will continue to work harder, to have the trophy.

Q. The third set, you still played a very high level, but it was back and forth and back and forth, and you guys were still holding the level for the third set. What do you think made the difference in that set?

ALEJANDRO DAVIDOVICH FOKINA: Well, I think I was calm and a little bit more aggressive than him. I think from the beginning I was with a little bit more confidence.

Yeah, I don't remember very well now the third set how it went from 5-2, but I think he didn't do a lot of first serve. Then I had a lot of chances to play the point with his second. Then I think I put a lot of pressure to him.

And at the end, from 5-2, I had my chances. He run everywhere. I did my best. I think I put all my effort in, and I put my -- I play with my confidence. I didn't go back and just put the ball in.

At the end, a win for him, but maybe is one of the matches that's gonna be like this.

Q. Lastly, you had a very, very positive week. So many positives. Level is incredible throughout the tournament. You're top 20 now. How do you assess your week and the many positives you've had so far?

ALEJANDRO DAVIDOVICH FOKINA: Well, thinking right now, not easy. I'm happy that I'm top 20, but the goal today was to lift the trophy.

Obviously we are happy that we play a very good level this week and performancing better and better, improving better and better every day. And it was the goal, the first step to be top 20. We did it. Now we will focus now on other goal. But obviously today I'm not a lot of to talk right now, how it went this week.
