Mirra Andreeva

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Mirra, welcome to Montreal. How has your practice been so far, and what are you enjoying about the tournament so far?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, it's my first time in Montreal, so I'm super excited to play here for the first time. I like the courts. I like the city. So I hope that maybe next couple of days I will get a chance to do a little bit more of sightseeing and get to know the city a little bit more.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. What do you want to achieve in this tournament? How do you feel coming in?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: Well, as I've never played this tournament before, it's going to be pretty interesting to see how I'm going to manage to kind of find my game and rhythm on this surface and in these conditions. So I'm just overall super excited to start the tournament, and I'm just going to try to play every match with 100% focus, and then we'll see how it goes.

Q. These press conferences are for top players, and they're not always as young as you are. How do you feel you're able to handle all that attention at such a young age?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: Well, I feel like now it's getting easier. At first, of course, everything was kind of new to me, and it was a little bit overwhelming, but now, yeah, I'm getting used to it. I'm gaining more experience.

SO, yeah, tournament with tournament it gets easier, and now it's kind of part of my job. I enjoy to do it, so for me it's not a big deal at all to, I don't know, do a lot of media sometimes.

Q. Maybe along the same lines, considering it's an individual sport, do you have people sort of training you for the media, people from the tour helping you with that, or are you sort of learning that by yourself?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: Well, of course, at first I had my agent that was helping me a lot with what kind of questions people usually ask and how it's going to go.

Yeah, so after that, I just kind of -- with doing it more, I just kind of know what to expect and then just answer the questions, whatever they are. Yeah, that's it.

Q. I'm just curious, who were your idols growing up on the WTA Tour?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: On WTA Tour, okay. Well, obviously I watched a lot of Maria Sharapova playing, Serena. I really liked the way Simona Halep played. I got to practice with her just once in the end of last year.

So for me it was like a surreal experience to kind of hit with a woman, with a player, that I really liked to watch when she played. So, yeah, I would say these three were the players that I was looking up to.

Q. Your sister obviously has been playing on the tour, your older sister. What kind of impact has she had kind of in your progression and your development as a player?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I can say that if she wouldn't be playing tennis or if she wouldn't be my sister at all, I don't think I would be here this fast, because she played so many tournaments that I didn't play after. Like she just showed me the way, and I kind of saved time during my career playing just the most important tournaments to kind of help earn more points and rise up the rankings a little bit faster.

I think if she wouldn't be playing tennis, I probably would be, like, maybe top 200 or something like this (smiling). So I'm super grateful that she kind of was leading the way for me throughout my whole life.

Q. I'm guessing this is the first time you've been to Canada. How do you like the country, and how has your stay been?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, for me so far the experience is like something between United States and Europe. So I don't really know what kind of city and country it is. So I hope in the next couple of days I'm going to be able to do a little bit more sightseeing, you know, just walk around the city to kind of meet with Canadian culture, and then maybe, I don't know, in couple of days I can really answer your question.

Q. We heard from I think the tournament director yesterday that part of that -- you wanted to see Katy Perry I think coming in a few days. Have you heard about? Is that something you're excited about, her being here in Montreal too?

MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yes. I heard that she would perform here like one week before the tournament started, so I got super excited. Then I found out that she's performing on Thursday I think, and that would be the day when I would play a match.

So I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to go, but Conchita told me that she's going to go anyway. Either she goes alone or with me. She doesn't really care. Yeah, I would be super excited to see her live, but we're going to see with scheduling and, yeah, we're going to see if I'm able to go or no.
