Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: All right, let's welcome the winning team of LIV Golf UK by JCB, Legion XIII. Well played today, guys, well played this week. Caleb, if I can start with you. Great round today, 6-under oar 65. To finish 13-under par for the week, third place, first individual podium, describe your round today and what this week means to you overall.
CALEB SURRAT: Yeah, it means a lot. Shows me a lot. It's very hard to be at the top of the leaderboard out here, especially for the first time. I've kind of been in kind of the moment here and there in a lot of tournaments but haven't been able to capitalize on a great event.
To be able to do it on a day where I knew it was going to be really, really hard means a lot to myself. Once again, hopefully just a good step forward in the right direction.
THE MODERATOR: Jon, great round for you today. 6-under par 65. Just as captain of this team, you've been a able to defend your UK title. Can you describe what it means to you and how proud of these guys you are?
JON RAHM: I will say I'm proud of everybody on the team no matter how we perform. Been a really good week, obviously being led by Caleb. Getting his first top 10 and finishing third is a big deal, a big week. Hoping this can be the boost he needed to get to a level that we all know he can get to. Not that he isn't already there. Just a matter of proving it to himself. He's definitely good enough.
Tom doing Tom things, steady. Just even. Don't even know he's there. Oh, there's Tom. Just a great player in general. For somebody that -- Tyrrell didn't have a great week, but one thing you can never ever doubt is his fight and knowing he's always going to try to give it all to the end no matter how things are going.
Proud of the team obviously. Looking forward to hopefully keep playing this good for the last few weeks. Give it a real good go at the end of the year.
THE MODERATOR: Tom, another comeback win this week here in the UK, following your win last time in Andalucia. What's the team's confidence heading into the final three events of the season now.
TOM McKIBBIN: Yeah, I would say the team is looking good. Two wins in a row now. I think we're all starting to play some nice golf and all are sort of consistent together, which I think makes for a good score come the end of the week.
I think if we can all keep building on that for the last two, I think we'll being looking good.
THE MODERATOR: Tyrrell, just a word to the fan support out there. Just describe the atmosphere out there this week.
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, it was certainly a fun atmosphere to play in front of. Feels like there was more people this year than last year, so that's obviously great that it's growing.
Yeah, UK fans definitely create a unique atmosphere, and it kind of felt a bit more like a football crowd to be honest. Yeah, there was some interesting shouts throughout the week, but ultimately it was good to have home support.
And obviously from my side, I wish I was able to play a bit better, but, yeah, I tried my best. Obviously wasn't my week individually.
Q. Jon, Tyrrell, this is your eighth win in 25 starts as a team. Obviously when you came in you guys probably figured you would be competitive with the one-two punch you guys have. Can you put it into perspective just stacking all the wins together? You switched out with Tom this year; keep winning. How do you process that from a team winning standpoint?
JON RAHM: I would say out of the two years, if there is a year where it was going to be a little less expected it might have been our first season together. Barely got the team together before Mayakoba. The only relationship that was preexisting there was me and Tyrrell. Didn't really know Caleb; didn't know Kieran at all, right, and win the first week and combine three more, was definitely really good year.
Coming into this one losing Kieran and get lucky enough to add Tom who's already a world-class player and the rule change of all four scores counting I thought was always going to be beneficial for us. I thought our average level is as high as the next team, so kind of following on the tails what I thought we could do this year, right?
This is with possibility Tyrrell and myself playing at a lower level than we did last year. So still producing the same results due to the fact we have Tom and Caleb playing better. Hoping we can all keep going up towards the end of the year.
Q. Tyrrell, put into words what the team success you guys have had the last two years.
TYRRELL HATTON: Obviously that side of it has been great. I think certainly this year we have a very strong team, and obviously it's nice that Caleb has been playing better this season and obviously the result this week is great for him to grow in his confidence and prove to himself that he's good enough; he just needs to trust himself more.
Yeah, and having Tom on the team, he's a fantastic player and certainly adds a lot of strength to our team.
Q. Do you remember when you were able to switch to real champagne on the podium? You didn't have it last year, did you?
TYRRELL HATTON: He wasn't old enough.
Q. Caleb wasn't old enough, right?
JON RAHM: We had real champagne. He just didn't have it. I don't think the league really thought about that one. Plus, most of the places we went and played he was legal to have alcohol. It was more of a choice.
TYRRELL HATTON: He still won't hold the champagne, which is more reason for him to get absolutely hosed when we're up there. He's asking for it. He's got nothing to come back with.
JON RAHM: That may be a thing coming forward to be honest. That was fun for everybody.
Q. Hi, Jon, the big announcement this weekend was that LIV is going to South Africa. Have you played there? I don't think you've played there. What are you expecting and how excited are you to go there and play there for the first time?
JON RAHM: I'm really looking forward to it. I've never been. Been told where we're going -- I don't know if it's a resort, city, I don't know. I think it's fairly new a and really, really good spot. It's too bad it's a little too far for the family to possibly join me. I would have liked to stay after and go on a safari and really explore Africa.
It's the only continent I haven't been to. From what I hear the crowd is already really looking forward to it and it could be a special week. Too bad it's so far away, but I'm looking forward to it.
Q. Jon and Tyrrell, Joaquin, five wins in a season, how do you put that into words? What makes him so good?
TYRRELL HATTON: Well, yeah, five wins in, what, ten events, is unbelievable. I mean, to even win one is hard enough. So just shows the level and the consistency that he's able to keep producing.
But, yeah, doesn't really have a weakness in his game. He hits the ball long ways. Wedges are great. Short game is unbelievable.
Yeah clearly he's holing far too many putts for my liking anyway. No, he's playing amazing. It's very impressive.
JON RAHM: I don't have much to add to that. In my mind nowadays in golf due to various circumstances I think Joaquin is severely underrated. He's one of the best players in the world and he keeps proving it. When it comes to his game he's good at everything, right?
Obviously has loads of confidence right now and taking advantage of that. It's never easy to win. To do it multiple times, let alone five times in a season, is quite impressive.
Q. You mentioned underrated. He's currently 19th on Data Golf which seems to be the most accurate reflection of world's best players at the moment. Does that sit well with you, 19? Does he feel better than that? Where would you put the him?
JON RAHM: I've seen all those strokes gained rankings. I still don't understand. He's won five times here. How is he behind so many of us? I don't know the numbers. I don't know. My guess is obviously it's majors, events outside of LIV that may be pushing him back. It's not a true reflection. He is undoubtedly a top-10 player in the world right now. I'm saying at that conservatively.
Q. Did you say top 10?
JON RAHM: Yeah.
Q. I agree. Just for Tyrrell, hundreds, if not thousands of youngsters following you. How much do you hope this event will have inspired that next generation of golfers?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I mean, it was great to see there were so many kids out there the last three days. Sure, if that was their first time coming to a golf event, then you hope they've had the best day of their lives so far and inspires them to go learn how to play golf, get better at golf, and aspire to be playing here one day.
Obviously time will tell, but my hope is that they just enjoyed the experience of coming here and certainly from my side it was nice to see so many young kids out there.
Q. Did you get much chance to explore the county?
TYRRELL HATTON: It's a lovely half an hour drive to St. George's Park, so, yeah, that's all I saw.
THE MODERATOR: Well played this week. See you in Chicago.
