Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Lorenzo, welcome back to Toronto. What memories do you have of this place and how has the preparation been going for you?
LORENZO MUSETTI: Yeah, I mean, I'm happy to be back here in Toronto. Last year I missed the Canada Open in Montreal. After the Olympics it was tough, it was a tough decision, but it was the right one.
Honestly, I came here with a lot of motivation. Two years ago I had good feelings, good memories from that time, so hopefully it's going to be a great tournament and a great event.
THE MODERATOR: Any questions?
Q. I know you entered the mixed doubles competition with Jasmine Paolini. Curious if you, first, you had to convince her to choose you over Jannik, and also how special is it to be playing with a countrywoman?
LORENZO MUSETTI: Yeah, honestly we made an exhibition, the Tie Break Tens at Indian Wells, so we had the chance to play together. And then we know each other since a long time, so after that, you know, the US Open, now with the news that they were making a new format of mixed doubles, so it was an interesting thing.
I think it's an opportunity also to see tennis also in a different way. And to share with Jasmine, it's an honor, it's a privilege for me, and hopefully we can have fun doing our games.
Q. We know you have a young family at home with a small child, what does it mean to you to be on tour knowing that you have your young family at home, how does that inspire you?
LORENZO MUSETTI: Yeah, I mean, it's an extra motivation to do well. Honestly, sometimes it's hard, because, especially when you stay a lot with them, when I stay a lot with them, you know, to move and to stay far, it's not the easiest thing to do. Especially now that Ludovico is growing, and he starts to understand more, so, it's not easy.
Luckily, I have also Veronica, my partner, she really understand my life and I have full support from her, so that's really a nice feeling for me. Also, they will come to New York to join the team and to be all together for the slam.
Q. During the clay season you were on fire playing amazing before the unfortunate injury at Roland Garros. How are you feeling about where your game is at now a couple months removed, heading onto the hard courts?
LORENZO MUSETTI: Yeah, honestly after Paris I had an injury that stopped me for a while, so it's not very easy to recover from that. Even the grass season so far it's been almost I didn't play any matches. Washington was a tough match, probably didn't play my best tennis.
I think in this kind of surface, which is not my, let's say, natural habitat, I have to try to get used to and try to have the right feelings. For example, today I practiced for the first time here in Toronto and I had nice feedback from the practice, so happy to be here and really looking forward to start this event.
Q. I wonder if you could share a little more about your preparation for NBO lately, and you shared that your dream car is a Ferrari 458, so I was wondering if you see any similarities between your game style and this car.
LORENZO MUSETTI: (Laughing). I mean, that's tough to drive, for sure. Ferrari is tough to drive. I'm also tough to drive (smiling). Sometimes my tennis, it's complicated. I mean, I have probably many, many variations in my game, so sometimes to choose the right one is not easy. Sometimes I find myself in a situation where I have to decide and, you know, it's never easy to make the right decision.
But yeah, I like cars, for sure, but I think I'm not the only player to like cars. Of course, Ferrari is probably the most famous brand in the world for cars, so definitely something that reminds me of my origin, and that's a nice comparison of myself. Hopefully I can be an Ferrari here in Toronto (laughing).
