Quick Quotes
Q. Congratulations.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Thank you.
Q. Put into words what it means to be a United States Golf Association champion.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: It's a pretty tough question. You know, it's really cool just seeing the names that are also on that trophy. Scottie Scheffler, Tiger Woods, all the great players of the game have come through this tournament.
Just to be on that level with them is a great feeling.
Q. You started the week with that 25-hole marathon win. Kind of like what Trevor Gutschewski did last year.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. Went three holes in the first round and knocked off a bunch of heavyweights. You did the same thing this week. Beat Tyler Watts, Luke Colton, guy ranked 52 in the world today. Put that into perspective.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yeah, I know I haven't had the best season coming into this, but I know that my game can stack up to those quality of golfers if I just keep hitting quality shots and putting pressure on. And I mean, it also helps that I do hit it slightly shorter than most because I'm hitting most of the shots first, so just being able to put that pressure on and then just hitting quality shots.
Q. And your putter was absolutely on fire, especially the last couple matches.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. I guess earlier in the week you were struggling a little bit with it.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. What you did figure out?
HAMILTON COLEMAN: It was just a slight ball position adjustment and also just actually when I won at Junior Players last year I had this feel where I just felt like my right wrist just stayed steady and I just did that exact same -- it's a very simple feel. Just kept the face stable.
But, yeah, and then just constantly working on my speed.
Q. You got off to a really fast start today, 5-up, then he started to peck away at you. You probably knew that was coming.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. Then he got it to 1, and there was a bunch of holes left on that back nine. How do you keep your composure when he's really starting to put the pressure on and you gain some momentum?
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yeah, I mean, I knew I was hitting -- I was playing not that bad of golf. I think I made like one bogey on this back nine.
Q. Uh-huh.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: I tied it with him, so I knew if I could just keep it -- keep myself in front that at the right time the putts would fall. That's what happened.
Q. Talk about the last putt. You know if you make it it's over. What is going through the mind of Hamilton Coleman as you look over that putt?
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yeah, I mean, just trying to stay focused on the task I have at hand, not what this could mean for me or anything. Just (wind) the ball out right.
And, yeah, then just make a firm stroke at it.
Q. Next year you're going to the U.S. Open. You watch it on TV?
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. I am sure there are guys you want to play practice rounds with.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. Anybody come to mind that you would love to pick the brain of?
HAMILTON COLEMAN: I would love to play with some of the Dawgs on TOUR. Yeah, just any of them really, yeah. I'm just excited to get the opportunity to play in that.
Q. And Brian Harman is the last Dawg to win this.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. Madden Hatcher in the '70s, so you're the third future Dawg to win -- no, fourth future Dawg because Jack Larkin, Sr. also won this. I don't know if you know him.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
Q. What does that mean?
HAMILTON COLEMAN: It's really cool to continue that legacy. Yeah, I'm excited for the future with the Bulldogs.
Q. You got a lot on your future schedule. Going to play in this next year.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. AM next month and get the next year at Merion, Shinnecock at The Open. Your life completely changed.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yes, sir.
Q. Just talk about that.
HAMILTON COLEMAN: Yeah, you know, that's not the reason I'm playing this, but it is a nice bonus.
