Washington D.C.
Quick Quotes
C. MOUTET/D. Medvedev
1-6, 6-4, 6-4
Q. How do you feel about the way you played today? And are you pleased to be in the semis?
CORENTIN MOUTET: Yeah, I'm very happy, of course. It was such tough conditions. Very hot, very humid. It was a big battle, and I'm happy to win this match. Yeah, it was very intense.
Q. How do you process this week, going in at the last minute, crazy weather, the timing, all of it? What has this week been like?
CORENTIN MOUTET: I played here for the first time two years ago. I knew how it was. It's very, very humid. It's tough especially when you're coming from the grass where there is not too many rallies.
But it's a good tournament to get used to the hard-court season, to get used to the big battles like this. In the same time, we are working physically for these kind of matches.
I don't know. I'm just happy. (Indiscernible.)
I was a bit mad about my performance, but happy to be back and happy of course to be in semis.
Q. When did you find out you were getting in in the first place?
CORENTIN MOUTET: The same day. I know how it is. I was first seeded, so I knew I had to wait so I was doing the things every day in case I get in.
Yeah, I made it. Yeah.
Q. The underarm serves are nothing new for you, but was that part of the game plan specifically against Medvedev?
CORENTIN MOUTET: Not the first priority, but I was very tired, so sometimes I did it because he was far. Sometimes I did it because I was cramping.
I went point after point today, trying to make the right choices, trying to control my body, to like cool my body down.
Yeah, I didn't think about it, to be honest. I just did when I felt like I could do it.
Q. (Question about breakpoint down.)
CORENTIN MOUTET: If I'm doing it, it's because I think I can have big chance to win the point. For me, it's like serving T out wide. You can serve underhand.
It's nothing like -- I should have no pressure on the breakpoints. It's a serve. So, yeah, if I'm doing it, it's just one target more that I can use.
Q. That last game, to come back after an hour and then to kind of have the cramping, it's gotta be frustrating. But then to still win that game on match point, have you experienced a turn of events and emotions like that?
CORENTIN MOUTET: I did usually lose those matches, because at this level, when you cramp, you're done. I didn't see it coming. I felt like I was better to claim the second set on him.
I felt he was quite tired, you know, especially when he called the doctor. I was feeling okay. I was feeling tired but not that bad. And then, like, I don't know, in, like, two minutes I just start to feel a few cramps and then started to feel my body. I was pretty lucky with the interruption. It helped me a lot, even if I came back on the court with cramps still. Yeah, I think it helped me a lot.
Q. You have bigger goals still here this weekend, but for a 500-level semifinal after not knowing earlier in the week what you were going to be doing this week, what's the satisfaction level, I guess, being here at this stage?
CORENTIN MOUTET: I'm very happy. It's my first time. I think it was the first time in quarters, as well. We are working hard. We are very ambitious in my team. I invest a lot in my team.
Yeah, make those kind of goals. That's why I was disappointed to lose in the quallies. I set big goals.
Yeah, I'm happy. It's part of the process. Of course I don't want to say I'm not surprised or it's normal because it's my first time, but that's what we are aiming for. We are working hard to be at the end of tournaments.
So I'm very happy to be in semifinal of a 500 and very excited for my match tomorrow.
