Charlotte Laffar

Ayrshire, Scotland, UK

Dundonald Links

Quick Quotes

Q. Very many congratulations. 6-under. Few players on the course, but currently you're the leader. What a day that's been.

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Oh, it was an amazing day. Started a bogey actually, but sometimes it goes that way. You relax into it.

I holed some great putts and I hit my driver the best I've hit it for a long, long time.

Yeah, I really took advantage of that.

Q. Got on a real run, didn't you? After the turn I think it was 4 and 5.

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yes, I think so. Again, just when you roll it in the rough and they're dropping, it's just keep going, keep plodding along. I managed to stay in the moment better than I normally do, which is quite nice. Having David on the bag helps.

So, yeah. The wind was challenging at times, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the test.

Q. It's the story that takes you here really. Obviously you took a long time out; you've had a couple children.

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yeah.

Q. They're here as well. And then to come back and play the golf that you're playing now, I mean, is it coming as a surprise to you? Is it not a surprise? You tell me.

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yes and no really. I've got no pressure at all. Golf is a lot of people's lives out here, but my children are my life. So this has become more of a working hobby I suppose you could say. I've just got to enjoy every moment.

I don't know how long I'm going to do it for. See how it goes. The kids, I've got to show them how I used to play, so, yeah.

Q. I know as well as you do that they take up so much of your time and your energy. How have you managed to balance the two and still be at a level where you can go out and lead a tournament like this?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: I think when you get to this level it doesn't go away. Obviously you need to tidy it up, which is what I've had to do. I think I don't get as much time as I used to, but the time I have I use a lot more wisely than I ever used to.

I only get two and a half, three days a week to do full practice, but that's probably better than I ever had having seven days a week. I think that's why it's a lot more focused and a lot more concentrated on what I need to do and just having a bit more fun with it.

Q. And to do it in this tournament particularly, Nelly Korda is here and all the rest of the girls, some of the best players in the world, and it's still you top of the tree after having all this time out. I guess that makes it extra special.

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yeah, to be honest I haven't really thought about it. Good golf -- you know you can play good golf. I think I can play amongst anyone really. It's the weekend that needs to come up to that level.

And you never know what's going to happen. I just (wind) and just kept going. Really pleased with that. We'll just see. Whatever happens from here, it's all experience, it's all learning, and it's great to show the kids.

Q. If nothing else happens this week, it shows you've still got it. You still belong. Doesn't matter how long you're out, the game is still there somewhere.

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Absolutely. It's nice to still see I can still shoot low even knowing I was going low and kept it going low with a couple of bad shots. Don't get me wrong, got a couple of lucky bounces, but you get that in golf. That's what happens when you're have a good day.

Tomorrow I might not get any bounces and no putts might drop, but it is what it is. It's golf.

Q. Since you're not playing this last year, how is your thoughts on Dundonald Links and the course this year?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yeah, it's amazing. It's in superb condition. It's so green. It's already drying out quite a lot actually. And the weather, I mean, you can't beat the weather we've had.

But, yeah, you kept fault the golf course at all. It's flawless.

Q. Another fellow countrywoman, Lottie Woad, made her professional debut today. She is also up there with you on the leaderboard. Sort of any thoughts on her and her debut today?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: I mean, everybody expected it really. It's Lottie. Come on. She's always going to be at the top of the leaderboard. That's what she's done the last few weeks. She's an incredible player. She is a lovely girl. She seems to have her head on her shoulders. Yeah, I hope she goes far because I know she will go far.

Q. So you've obviously taken quite different journey to her.

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yes.

Q. How old are your kids?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Two and four.

Q. Did you play in between the two of them?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: I didn't play at all between the two, and then I came back a little bit after the second.

And then I didn't play a lot, I won't lie in the four years I had off. Obviously towards the end, the third year coming back I did start to play more, but I absolutely love being a mum. I love being a mum.

Q. And are you loving combining?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yeah, it's cool. It's like I have two separate lives, but I suppose that's like any working mum. I said this to my friend the other day, I go to a different country normally to do my work; whereas a lot of people walk out of one door and have to switch back to mum.

I get to separate them. It sometimes makes it easier. Very lucky with all my support systems I've got at home. Don't get me wrong, they're here this week and it's absolute chaos. Who doesn't love chaos, so...

Q. When it's sort of like a break, a proper break, do they go to a parent?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: So when we're at home they go to nurse. And then my oldest starts school in September. And then I've got my mum and step-dad and my dad and stem-mum and in-laws and they're all close by and they all help out. I always say my mum is like the living, breaking Maria Poppins. She's incredible.

So I'm just so lucky to have that. And then they have -- the oldest has three days of nursery; the youngest just the two. That's only been since March.

Q. Would you say it makes you enjoy golf more?

CHARLOTTE LAFFAR: Yeah, you definitely appreciate it more. It makes the good times better. Does make the hard times or the bad times or when you miss the cut you think, can I do this? I wasted a week being with them to miss the cut. That gets a bit harder. The losses in golf are always hard.

Yeah, they'll love it when I go back and see them tonight or whatever. They'll be so excited.
