July 22, 2025

Daniel Evans

Washington D.C.

Quick Quotes

D. EVANS/Z. Bergs

3-6, 6-4, 6-3

Q. What is it like being back in D.C.?

DANIEL EVANS: Yeah, it's great. You know, last year I couldn't come back because of the Olympics, and I have always played here even before when I won it and I have always enjoyed it here.

It's obviously the capital city. I don't know. I mean, it's pretty cool what goes on here.

So, yeah, I have always played here, I've really enjoyed here, and luckily I have always played pretty well here.

Q. I think with sports it's all about win/lose. It's pretty black and white. But what you did last year I think was pretty impressive. Did you think of it as something special to not come here, do the Olympics with Andy, and forego those points?

DANIEL EVANS: I mean, it wasn't really a decision. Listen, I love playing in Washington, there's no doubt about that, but for me, whatever sport you play, when you represent your country, that's the biggest honor in any sport. It doesn't matter if it's football, rugby, whatever it is.

For me, that's just how I have been taught, how I have been brought up. And to play with Andy was just sort of like that's how it happened, and it was obviously his retirement. But, you know, it was an amazing experience.

Yeah, we had a great time, and we were lucky in the end. We had an opportunity to get in a medal match, but it wasn't to be. Yeah, I look back with fond memories that I played with Andy in his last match, and, you know, it's something I will always remember.

Q. I mean, it's the start of the U.S. swing. You're kind of on your road back up. Any goals, any particular things...

DANIEL EVANS: Not really. You know, I was listening to somebody the other day, and they were saying that setting goals is such an important thing. And I have never set goals.

I just really enjoy competing, enjoy being out here. We are really incredibly lucky how good our tour is. When you get a chance to play on the main tour, you shouldn't take it for granted.

Q. Would you say that's how you are as a player? I feel like Dan Evans has always been the rebel, the fun-out-there player. Do you just kind of go with the flow?

DANIEL EVANS: Yeah, that's sort of my game style, as well. There is not much sort of structure to it.

But no, yeah, I think I live like that, I enjoy being like that. You know, it's like you said, it's very black-and-white tennis, it's about winning or losing, and the bottom line is we lose more than we win, so we have to become pretty good at losing and getting on with it. That served me well during my time as a player.
