THE 153RD OPEN

July 18, 2025

Tyrrell Hatton

County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Are you happy with that?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yes and no. It felt like a pretty frustrating day. Didn't hit it particularly close on many holes. I missed the green with a lob wedge into 14, which after a perfect tee shot was frustrating, and obviously ended up making bogey. That was a bit of a shame. But it's been a solid couple of days. I'm happy with a few parts of my game. I'd like to be in the fairway more this weekend and hitting it a bit closer. But we'll see how we go.

Q. It didn't seem like one of your normal reactions. Are you getting the hang of keeping a lid on -- after the U.S. Open, are you finding a balance?

TYRRELL HATTON: I don't know. I was still pretty vocal. Maybe I'm just having to do it away from the microphone.

Q. What were you telling yourself? Were you trying to cheer yourself up?

TYRRELL HATTON: Oh, no. No. It was pretty negative stuff, yeah.

Q. Do you want to share it with us?

TYRRELL HATTON: No, it'll get me in trouble.

Q. You've always said that you're very good at compartmentalising, that you sort of refocus very quickly.

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I've always felt like even though I can be losing my shit, I can get over the next shot and still have a clear mind of what I'm still trying to achieve on that shot. Although from the outside it looks like I'm completely gone, in my own mind I still know where I'm at.

Q. You'll never change, but do you want to?

TYRRELL HATTON: I'm 33. I think that ship has sailed, to be honest.

Q. It doesn't do you any harm, does it?

TYRRELL HATTON: No, it just means I get stick from you guys generally. No, I'm not going to change. It's just how I am, how I play.

I've always said, as long as it's not affecting my playing partners -- sure, there's been times I've probably gone too far and you comment on a putt when they're putting on the same line and then it maybe affects where they're hitting their putt, stuff like that, I think that's part of what you learn as you get more experience, so I do try and avoid that kind of thing.

But yeah, as long as I'm not affecting the other guys, then I'm not going to change.

Q. In terms of getting the hang of actually competing, obviously Oakmont, you said yourself, the first time you felt like contending, you're bang in the mix here, and it looks like you've got the hang of something.

TYRRELL HATTON: I don't know. I really enjoyed that experience in Oakmont. I know it wasn't the ending of how I'd like it to have played out, but how I dealt with everything there and even out on the golf course with the most pressure, I still feel like I hit some really good golf shots.

I kind of left feeling proud and happy with how I dealt with everything. I'd love to have another chance to win. So far we're in a decent position, but we've still got a lot of golf left to play. I don't know what the forecast is like for tomorrow. You've still got so many amazing players just starting their round now.

We'll see what the afternoon guys do, what the lead goes to. But from my side, it's been a solid couple of days. I can't really complain too much.

Q. Your Dunhill Links record is pretty good. Do you regard yourselves as a links specialist?

TYRRELL HATTON: No. I mean, I'd say I feel fairly comfortable on links. I feel like I can hit certain shots which you need to do out there. But the setup at the Dunhill is very different from what we experience this week. For me, I don't feel like you can compare the two.

Obviously I'd love to have three Claret Jugs. That would be really nice. Yeah, that's pretty hard to do.

Q. We saw you at the Ballyreagh course the other night. How did you enjoy that?

TYRRELL HATTON: It was great. It was nice to go out there. We played, I think, in a six-ball, and it was nice to just take your mind off part of the stress of this week. It was nice to actually go out there and almost feel like a kid and just enjoy it. I feel it's easy to miss that when you're just going tournament to tournament.

Yeah, it was really fun. It was a beautiful evening. I went and had three pints of Guinness afterwards, so that kind of made the evening a bit better.

Q. We had a monk on minus 3 after the first day, and he said it helped unwind and de-stress. How do you unwind and de-stress after a round?

TYRRELL HATTON: Normally a Guinness is a pretty good way to start. Certainly this week anyway.

I don't know, generally just, whether it be in the house and just watching Netflix, something like that, just to get away from golf.

Q. A couple more pints tonight?

TYRRELL HATTON: Would be rude not to. I think three is the magic number. If you go past three, you kind of --

Q. The optimal level?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, two to three, because you're definitely not close to a hangover and you still feel like you've got -- hopefully I've got a late tee time tomorrow so I can have a lay-in, as well.

Q. You seemed to have a nice moment on 18 with Bo. Can you share what you said?

TYRRELL HATTON: To be honest, I said, I'll see you later for a pint. It was a lovely moment. He did say go well this weekend, so I responded, I'll see you later for a pint.
