THE 153RD OPEN

July 18, 2025

Harris English

County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. How would you describe the round out there, some good bits, some less good bits, a bit of weather? How was it?

HARRIS ENGLISH: Yeah, that was a great description. I did some really good things, very top class, like the birdie on 11. I hit two really good shots. That's probably one of the hardest holes on the course, striped a drive and striped a 7-iron up there to about four feet.

Then I made some pretty sloppy bogeys out there. I would say No. 4 I had a decent up-and-down chance and didn't hit a great chip. Bogeyed No. 12; you can't really bogey par-5s out here. I birdied No. 11, one of the hardest holes and turned around and bogeyed No. 12.

Kind of fell asleep on the tee shot on 15. It's one of the easier tee shots on the course, and I just fell asleep on it. Made a pretty good bogey there. Then played solid coming in.

17 and 18 were pretty tough with the wind switch and the rain coming in. Happy with the way I finished, but definitely need to clean up some stuff on the weekend.

Q. Is that because a course like this and the links and everything, is that just an example of why you can't kind of switch off for a second because, if you fall asleep on the tee shot, this course, it punishes you. Is that kind of what happens?

HARRIS ENGLISH: Yeah, you can't relax for a second because you can get in some really bad spots, and you've got to focus for the full 18 holes, for the full five-plus hours that we're out there. It's a long day, and that's definitely no excuse. It was kind of a jolt to the system of I can't lose focus like that. Brought it back nicely, and then I'm happy with the way I finished.

Q. How do you feel in the mix going into the weekend? Top of the leaderboard, you're definitely in the mix for it. How are your feelings?

HARRIS ENGLISH: It's good. That's what you want the first few days is to get in the mix on the weekend. I had a good week last week at the Scottish to get prepared.

I feel good. I feel like I'm swinging well. I feel like I'm doing everything really well. Make a few more putts tomorrow. Some of those 8-, 9-footers kind of slid by today. That happens, but I feel like I'm still putting the ball well and doing everything great. Just got to clean it up.

Q. You said last night you were expecting -- looked at your phone, and you were expecting a message from Eric watching back at home. Did you have one on your phone? Have you spoken to him since? Is he watching every shot? How did that go?

HARRIS ENGLISH: Yeah, I'm sure he's watching every shot. He's like, hey, you're playing great golf. You're playing some of the best golf in the field. Just keep hitting fairways and greens, which is kind of my game of just keep plodding along and play a bit of chess out here. I feel like I did that for the most part. Just got to keep going.

I miss having him out here, disappointed he's not here, but I know he's rooting me on from Palm Beach Gardens. Happy with what Ramon's got going this week, my caddie. I've been working with for probably 11-plus years. He knows my game really well. We've had a great strategy and I've executed thus far.

Q. For people who maybe haven't followed your career, don't know the situation over here, it's become a bit of a talking point. What happened to Eric? For people seeing it from afar, I wondered if you could tell me what is he like as a person? People kind of see the headlines but don't really know what he's like as a person.

HARRIS ENGLISH: He's probably one of the most positive people I've ever been around. He's obviously been in a pretty rough spot for 10-plus years, so every day is a gift. He does not have a bad day. So that's what I love about him. I can say, hey, we're going to go practice for 10 hours in a row, he's going to be all for it. Hey, I'm not going to practice today, I'm going to go hang out with my family, he's all for it.

He's got my back, and he's just a great person. He's probably one of everybody's favourites out here among the players and caddies. He's just a very joyful guy. I know all the caddies and players have been asking me how he's doing. They can't believe he's not over here. Hopefully we'll get it worked out for next year.

Q. That's really nice. Was he giving you any kind of tips, some caddie tips from afar? You should have played this here, you should have taken that club here.

HARRIS ENGLISH: He's not going to do that. He knows how hard it is in the moment, and you're trying to make the best decision you can in the moment. You can't really look backwards, you should have done this, should have done that. Yeah, he's been great.

I miss having him out here, but we're doing good so far. I'll have him back in Memphis.

Q. How do you assess Keegan's situation? He played so well again today.

HARRIS ENGLISH: Yeah, he's playing great, one of the top players in the world. Might be playing some of the best golf of his career. It's awesome to see. I know he's got a lot of things on his mind with the Ryder Cup. He deserves to be on that team. So we'll see.

I know he's got a lot of decisions to make and obviously a lot, I guess ending in the BMW. We'll see. In all our eyes, he definitely deserves to be on the team.

Q. And could a playing captain work?

HARRIS ENGLISH: Who knows? However it falls, he's going to do a great job. He's going to have his fire and energy. That's what you kind of have the vice captains for. The same group of people have been running all the Ryder Cups from the American side. They can take a lot off his plate.

I think a lot of stuff he does before the tournament, and if he does end up playing, he can put that aside and put it on somebody else's shoulders and go give it his all for the USA.

Q. We just saw there the randomness of The Open, raining there for 30 minutes. In a sport that you prepare so much, do you relish that and enjoy that, or is it difficult that so much can be left to chance?

HARRIS ENGLISH: It could definitely affect you for sure, but I've done a good job of whatever conditions I have at this moment, I'm going to play it to the best of my ability. That's all you can do. You can moan and complain that we had to play in 30 minutes of rain and some guys might not play in the rain, but that's this tournament. That's the randomness of this tournament.

Coming over here, you kind of know and expect that's what's going to happen. You've got to be the best you can be at that moment.
