THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 28, 2025

Carlos Alcaraz

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Carlos, nice to be back as the champion?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: Yeah, it feels great to be back here in Wimbledon as the defending champion. Yeah, is really beautiful thinking about what happened last year. Just really excited about to start the tournament. Excited about playing my first match on Monday. Let's see how I will go.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You hit with Fonseca. How was that hit? Talk a little bit about Joao and his game on grass. He's quite new to it.

CARLOS ALCARAZ: I was excited. I was excited about hitting with him, since the last time that I hitted with him it was in Master in 2023, if I'm not wrong. It was really kind of a long time ago. I was excited to hit with him when he brought to the ATP.

Yeah, I mean, I'm going to say he's quite new on grass. I've been talking with him. He's not really experienced player on grass. But his style, he loves to play aggressive, to hit big forehands, go to the net. So I'm pretty sure he's going to get the level on grass really, really soon.

Right now, yeah, a few things that he has to learn obviously because he's so young, and he is just starting to play the new tournaments. But his level is pretty, pretty high so far.

Q. I wanted to ask you, when you play without fear, is it the most free that you ever feel in anything that you do?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: Sorry?

Q. When you play without fear, like you did in the closing stages at Roland Garros, is that the most free that you ever feel?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: Probably, yeah. When I'm playing without thinking about anything else, but just playing or just thinking about the enjoy, I think I just got that freedom to play whatever I like, I just enjoy.

When that happens, I always show my best tennis, my best level. So probably so far I'm feeling the most, let's say, freedom that I've played so far.

Q. Can you remember the first time you ever stepped on a grass court to hit a ball? When and where was it? What were your first impressions of playing on that surface?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: Well, I remember it was in 2019 I played Roehampton juniors, the great one. I actually surprised myself. I surprised myself because I played a good matches. I had to retire because I got injured in abdominal, but it was good. It was decent, let's say (smiling).

Obviously first matches on grass, never easy to move, you know, how to play. Shots are quite different, but I made quarterfinals. Then I played juniors here. I made quarterfinals as well. So it was a good results for me, even though it was just the first time that I touched the grass.

So it was great experience, new ones. But yeah, it was a long time ago.

Q. What do you like now about playing on grass?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: I think the most beautiful tennis that we can watch is on grass. The style that the people bring to the court when they play on grass, I think is so beautiful. The sound of the ball. The movement is really tough, but when you get it, it's kind of you're flying (smiling).

It's just pretty well to me because I really want to hit slices, dropshots, going to the net all the time, playing aggressively. I think on grass it's the style that you have to play. So that's what I like the most.

Q. There's only four men that have won three Wimbledon titles in a row. Is that something that's on your mind, that legacy?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: Well, yeah, I mean, I'm coming here thinking that, yeah, I really want to win the title. I really want to lift the trophy. Not thinking about how much player have done it, you know, winning three Wimbledons in a row.

I'm just thinking about, okay, I just want to be ready and just want to prepare myself in the best way possible, just to start the tournament with a lot of confident. Obviously I feel a lot of confident right now (smiling).

But just thinking about still going forward, it's still doing the good things, and start the tournament. So two weeks could be really long on a Grand Slam, but right now I'm not thinking about who I could join if I win three Wimbledons in a row.

Q. There's some pictures of you training. It looks like you're wearing a patch that analyzes your sweat. Can you tell us a bit more about that, because it could be very hot on Monday? How important is that to your game?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: Well, I always say the details makes difference. Yeah, it's something to control the sweat, what should I take during the matches, before the matches, just to be at my 100%. Probably just going to help one or two percent more. But I think, as I said, details make difference. This is something I working on sometimes. I did it in Paris. I'm doing here just to see what should I take.

Yeah, this week, last week, and I think next week it's going to be pretty hot. So I think it's going to be great to know what should I take more, more water or whatever.

Q. You travel with a pretty big team. You have a lot of people around you. How important is it for you to be surrounded by people, not only people you work with, but people who make you feel good when you're at these tournaments for a long time?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: Well, for me it's as much important being great or feeling great off the court than on the court. I think it should go in the same path.

If I'm feeling bad or I'm feeling bored or feeling like I don't want to be in that place off the court, I'm not going to play good.

So be surrounded by a great team, great people, family, friends, help me a lot to stay calm, to be great off the court. Then in a way, they make me play a really good tennis, show my best tennis on the court.

For me, both things are really, really important. I'm just really grateful for having such a great team around me.

Q. How did you spend your days after Queen's? What did you do to disconnect?

CARLOS ALCARAZ: I play some golf. I play some golf. Actually, I play with Andy Murray on Monday and a few more players. Just went to the center a little bit. Just wanted to go to the center a little bit, walk around, have a good food, and just having quality time with them doing some stuff that probably I wouldn't be able to do it while the tournament is on.
