THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 29, 2025

Lorenzo Musetti

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: How are your grass court preparations going?

LORENZO MUSETTI: Well, I didn't play much, honestly. It's been tough, of course, after French Open to don't play any tournament before Wimbledon, to prepare the grass season.

But the important thing is to stay healthy and to be healthy enough to play, so here we are.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You just mentioned the French Open injury and your preparation for the grass. How long of a period did you take off the court to recover physically before coming onto grass here? How long have you been here?

LORENZO MUSETTI: So, basically I stayed out without touching any racquet two full weeks, but the important thing was doing therapies and rehabilitation every day. Let's say I didn't take as a vacation the two weeks.

I worked hard as I could to be ready and to be fast enough to recover for be ready to be playing here. I arrived here on Monday, so let's say one week of training, which was a little bit not really one week because I was sick a little bit two days, so...

But at least we are here. We finally are here and close enough to start and to debut.

Q. Where were you when Carlos and Jannik played the French Open final? What were your thoughts as you were watching it?

LORENZO MUSETTI: So I was at home. Honestly, I didn't watch the entire match, but I watched from the fifth, I think. I watched just the last set.

But I was pretty shocked, and of course, in a positive way, and really I was enjoying, as everybody I think was doing, the level that they showed. Pretty outstanding, I would say. Pretty amazing to see such a high level in such an important match. Really a roller coaster of emotions.

Of course, Jannik had his chances, but Carlos was really, really good to came back. Then the fifth set was really honestly amazing till the end. I think Carlos played an unbelievable tiebreak at the end.

But a big, big shout-out of both players, because they showed that at the moment they are the best in the world.

Q. You're now the highest ranked players in the ATP rankings with a one-handed backhand. How does that make you feel? Do you enjoy being the leader of the one-handed backhand?

LORENZO MUSETTI: Of course, I feel proud, but I don't feel any pressure on that. I always love to try to keep alive the one-handed tradition, especially I think on grass. We are, of course, here in Wimbledon. It's something that it really fits well in the grass court, especially using the rotation with the slice and with the many variation that I can use.

So definitely I really enjoy playing on grass with my one-handed backhand. Hopefully in the future I'll try to go higher and higher as ranking, you know, is going.

Q. I know you came from an injury. How happy have you been with your progress?

LORENZO MUSETTI: Yeah, has been tough after French Open because, of course, I wanted to be, let's say, more prepared for Wimbledon this year. Of course, I have semifinal to defend. It's an important stage of the season, which I wanted to do great and to continue the great form that I showed in the last months.

But I think also the positive thing is I spend some time with my family. So if I have to see the positive and the negative things, I will go more with the positive ones and try to spend time with the family, spend time with my closest friends, and enjoy a little bit of Italy, which was a long time since I was not going there.

Hopefully this kind of time that I spend home, it's gave me an extra motivation to do well and to try to defend my semifinal here in Wimbledon.

Q. What are your thoughts about machines rather than people making the lines calls?

LORENZO MUSETTI: That's a good question.

I mean, I think it's going to look a little bit strange because, of course, we have an enormous tradition here in Wimbledon.

In terms of tour, in terms of, let's say, every tournaments has his own line umpires. But of course, the elegance that was showed by the line umpires here in Wimbledon, was such a traditional thing, historical thing.

Of course, we are always trying now to evolve. I think also speaking as a player, like this we will have less discussion because I think it's really tough to judge, especially right now, which the ball is going really fast. In the modern days, I think we will need more help from the technology.

I'm agree of this change, especially here on grass. I think that's the right thing that they made.
