Press Conference
I. SWIATEK/C. McNally
5-7, 6-2, 6-1
THE MODERATOR: Iga, good result today. Give us your thoughts on the match.
IGA SWIATEK: Thank you.
Well, yeah, for sure second and third set I played how I wanted to play. In first I got stuck a little bit having good score at the beginning. Obviously Caty won the set. I'm happy I just got back and played my game.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. What do you think that really changed the first set in Caty's game and in your game? Was anything specific in your game that you found to be struggling with?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, I think I lost my intensity. Obviously I knew I can play well 'cause I did at the beginning of the match, but I lost the quality, did some unforced errors. Then on grass I feel like the momentum can change pretty quickly. I let her back in the game.
Yeah, I was still, like, trying to be proactive, but sometimes I missed easy shots. Yeah, this for sure gave her space to push sometimes.
Q. In your post-match interview you spoke about raising the intensity. I wanted to know, for you what is the difference between raising your intensity and also having your aggressive style or aggressive tactics during the game?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, it's about being more proactive, I would say and sometimes making braver decisions and for sure the intensity with the footwork.
Q. Can you explain raising your intensity, but also sometimes trying to be more relaxed and more patient with the tennis and the points, which it seemed like you were doing really well today, especially in the second and third set. I'm curious, does that start from the first shot where you're focusing on your return rather than to really go for it?
IGA SWIATEK: You can still raise your intensity and be patient and make smart decisions. It just means that you're going to play these shots really 100%.
But it doesn't mean that they need to be like crazy. So, like, these are two different things, I would say. Yeah, it's always good to have a balance obviously.
Q. Another Polish player in the third round, Kamil, on the men's side, I don't know how well you know him or his story, but what have you made of him as a player and a person?
IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, yeah, for sure we know each other. Like, tennis in Poland is pretty small community, so you kind of know everyone.
He has always been, like, super nice guy and really humble and hard-working. He deserves all the best. For sure he was, like, coming up. Obviously he had a (indiscernible) case. I can also relate to that. His was much harder, but I'm happy that he's back. I'm always cheering for him because he's one of the nicest people.
Yeah, everybody should.
Q. Did you ever hit with him at United Cup?
IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, yeah, we practice sometimes. I was telling my team yesterday that these were one of the best practices, honestly. Like, he just has a great rhythm. Hopefully when we're both going to go to United Cup next year, we'll hit, as well.
Q. Maybe I should know the answer to this, but I don't. How do you know Oscar Piastri? You congratulate each other online.
IGA SWIATEK: We know each other only through Instagram, kind of. I know he's cheering. I think he said after one tournament that he's cheering for me, so I'm kind of, you know, doing the same (smiling). He seems like a great guy, so why not?
Q. Do you follow F1 much?
IGA SWIATEK: Not every race. I usually know when something interesting happens. Right now, I feel like it's kind of hard not to follow F1. I don't know, the sport, like, PR-wise went so high that everybody knows what's going on. It's, for sure, really entertaining and great to watch.
Q. Do you ever wish tennis was that good at promoting itself, or the WTA, the way F1 does?
IGA SWIATEK: I think it's a bit different and it's a bit harder because we have so many players that can win tournaments. One week this player is at the peak, the other one is not.
I mean, F1, you only have, like, 20 drivers. I guess it's a bit easier to create fan base and everything. So hard to compare, but obviously I want the best for our sport.
Q. What are your thoughts about Danielle Collins' game and the challenge ahead for you?
IGA SWIATEK: I haven't watched any of her games, so... I will need to prepare tactically for sure tomorrow.
Q. What would be your description of her, in general, from your experience with her in the past?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, flat hitter, baseline player. Solid serve. Likes to be proactive, be aggressive.
Q. I noticed in between the second and third set you went over to talk to your box while your opponent left the court. Did you speak about anything about how to change during the game that helped you?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, I think the second set was already good, so Wim kind of repeated what he was sometimes telling me also from the box during the second set. It wasn't anything new.
I just wanted to go and check if they have any tips, yeah.
Q. It made a difference for you to hear that again?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, as I said, like, he didn't say anything that was surprising for me. I just continued what I was doing in second set.
Q. How has playing a tournament before - completely different court - but playing on the grass coming in here, how has that helped you to problem solve during matches?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, just having the chance to do that before on, maybe, a tournament that is less stressful, I would say, helps because you just get the experience.
For sure, these matches in Bod Hamburg gave me confidence. Also, the body feels the matches differently than the practices. Already having that through, that first matches on grass, for sure is always helpful for any athlete, I would say.
Q. Do you find that the game's become a lot more competitive outside of the top 5 on both the men's and women's side, looking at all the seeds that have fallen out of the tournament? Do you find that's going to be the story going ahead in all of these major events?
IGA SWIATEK: I have no idea what's going to happen in the future. Also, I remember you guys asking me questions why there's no consistency on WTA. Then I don't feel that because, like, me and Aryna and Coco have been winning a lot. Like, sometimes we will lose early because the schedule is pretty crazy. You can't win everything.
I feel like on grass there are many upsets every year. It's just a surface where we shouldn't really... I don't know. It doesn't really matter what happens here when we go to the hard court season, I would say.
