THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Rough one out there today. What happened with the foot? It looked like you landed strange on it. What happened there?
TOMMY PAUL: Yeah, I'm not really sure if it was when I landed or when I pushed off on that kind of overhead -- I don't even know what the shot was. I just heard a pop, and it didn't feel great.
I called the trainer out. In the moment I thought it was done, but actually I was able to play on it. Obviously not as bad as I thought it was going to be in the moment, but it's just annoying, you know. Been dealing with a lot of stuff, so I just want to play a normal match at some point.
Q. It affected you a lot, though, like two sets you weren't able to move your normal way?
TOMMY PAUL: I don't want to take anything away. He served great. He came up super clutch.
I was still creating opportunities for myself the whole rest of the match really. I felt like I was creating opportunities in his service game. He was coming up with the goods on his serves.
I feel like he returned pretty well. I mean, obviously he just outplayed me there at the end.
Q. What were you told the pop was? Do you have an indication yet?
TOMMY PAUL: No, no, not really. On court you don't really get much information really. I just told him what it was, and I was, like, It doesn't feel that bad, let's just wrap it really tight. I don't want it to move for the rest of the match really.
Then obviously I finished and showered, and now I'm here. So we'll evaluate the whole thing here pretty soon, I would imagine.
Q. Does it hurt a lot right now?
TOMMY PAUL: I mean, not feeling 100% in the foot right now.
Q. Did you consider stopping?
TOMMY PAUL: I mean, yeah, in the moment I thought it was -- I thought the match was over, but then I was saying earlier, I mean, I was able to play. We just taped it up really tight. I didn't want it to move too much.
I was saying earlier that I was still able to create so many opportunities for myself. I still felt like I could win the match. Then you never know after a match like that. Hopefully you can work on it tomorrow, have a day off tomorrow, and get back to it for round three.
I was creating opportunities, so I thought I got to keep going.
Q. When you say you've been dealing with a lot, do you mean the ab issue? How is that? Were you feeling it today at all?
TOMMY PAUL: The ab and adductor stuff from the French. The adductors feel a lot better. The ab is still there a little bit.
Then the foot was actually something that has been bothering me for a couple of weeks now kind of since I started training again. It was like the exact spot that it's been hurting where it popped, so that's why I was, like, even more concerned about it.
But, yeah, like I said, we'll evaluate tonight or tomorrow.
Q. You've been pretty healthy the last couple of years. You've been able it play a heavy schedule. Do you think this is just a couple of freak things, or do you think your heavy workload has caused some of these injuries?
TOMMY PAUL: That's a good question. I like to think that we work very smart. Obviously we work very hard, but I do think that we do a good job of, you know, prehab stuff, making sure you get in all the stuff to kind of avoid injuries, take care of the body.
We do a lot of body work with my physio. I like to think that they're just kind of freak things, and we can take care of these and get back to playing healthy.
