Press Conference
J. SINNER/P. Martinez
6-1, 6-3, 6-1
THE MODERATOR: Jannik, could you talk a little bit about the match today.
JANNIK SINNER: Yes, I think we all saw he was struggling with the shoulder. It was for sure easier to return his serve. But in other way I felt like from the back of the court we both played, yeah, we had some good rallies.
Obviously very happy to be in the next round. Yeah, now let's see what's coming.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. You've only conceded 17 games so far. That's actually a record now. You've overtaken Roger Federer. He only conceded 19 games in 2004. Could you speak a little bit about your memory of watching Federer on grass at Wimbledon, and also, how are you feeling at the moment on grass?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, well, I watched, of course, matches of him and the classics, the all-time classics. The tennis was for sure a little bit different in a way of more serve and volleys back in the days. The grass was different.
But yeah, obviously I enjoyed it so much, watching Roger play. I never played against him in an official match. But in the other way, how they played, it was amazing. But yeah, tennis has changed a little bit, that's for sure.
Yeah, about the games lost, this is whatever. I'm not looking on these kind of records. I know that everything can change very quickly from one round to the other.
Yeah, but again, I'm very happy to be in the next round.
Q. There are players that don't have all the financial resources. They rather take physical training with them instead of an experienced tennis coach.
JANNIK SINNER: What? Sorry, I didn't understand.
Q. Players without financial resources, they would rather take a physical trainer on tour instead of an experienced tennis coach.
JANNIK SINNER: Well, these are choices. I mean, I know it costs a lot of money to have a full team around you. Not everyone obviously being in the position where maybe they are, it's impossible to have them. But it's their own choice of what they are aiming for, no?
I think the ATP is doing a great job to have the physios for us players if we need something. They are very, very professional.
Of course, physical trainer, it's not in the ATP because I think everyone trains in different ways. Everyone has to go through certain moments to understand what the body needs.
But yeah, I mean, now the earnings, they have gone up. Also the first-round matches you earn more money. But in the other way, yeah, it costs a lot of money traveling and going around the world.
I'm lucky to be in a position that I can have a full team around me. I'm very grateful for that. But yeah, if someone has one person, and they go around with physical trainer or tennis coach, I think that's more a personal choice.
Q. You've not dropped a set going into round four. How do you think you're able to keep bringing out your best tennis regardless of who your opponent is? Carlos has struggled.
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, I mean, I just try to watch more my side of the net, trying to keep my level as high as I can.
Never taking things for granted in any case. Especially on grass when you are mentally not 100% or maybe you're a bit slow at times, it's easily dropped one set. One break is easily done, as we saw today in the second set. He had couple of break points. If I don't serve well there, things can go complicated.
I'm happy, of course. In the other way, now let's see what's coming because the opponents, obviously whoever is in the fourth round, they deserve to be there. It means that they play a very high level of tennis. Let's see what's coming.
In general terms, I think for the first week I'm very happy.
Q. How would you describe your mood, your mindset right after Roland Garros? By the time you arrived here, were there any doubts or concerns or negative feelings that you had coming into this tournament?
JANNIK SINNER: Why negative feelings? Because of I lost in the final?
Q. How that match ended.
JANNIK SINNER: No. Look, it's a new tournament. New Grand Slam. New surface. I'm not concerned about my level I can play at times. I'm not concerned that one loss can influence you for so long time. I believe that here is a new chance that I can do something good for my side.
If I play some good tennis, I know that I can go far potentially. Maybe I lose the next round. I don't know. But I'm not concerned. Honestly, I'm very, very happy to be here. I'm happy that I have the chance to play on such special courts here in Wimbledon. There is no better place to play tennis at this moment.
Everything is going well. I had a good preparation to prepare this tournament. Now let's see how I do here and how far I can go.
Q. We know that tennis comes down to fine margins. When it comes to intimidating your position, not dropping a set so far, is that something that plays in your mind that you might be getting to them?
JANNIK SINNER: I don't know. I think, as I would say, every match has his own story. Things can change very quickly. It depends also before the match what happens. Maybe you don't sleep well. Maybe something happens in the practice session. Maybe you have some pain. You never know.
Of course, if I have the chance, I try to close the match as fast as I can. I try to make that happen. In the other way, I'm not rushing. I try to play my level. I also try to improve couple of things.
Today I could have gone a little bit more to the net, which I haven't done, for example. There are always small things what I try to do better in next rounds or tomorrow in practice sessions. Because at the end of the day, the most important from my point of view is to get better as a player. You have every day the chance to do that. That for me is the most important.
Q. You mentioned you're very happy with your form. You said you focus on your side of the net. Do you look further down the draw at other opponents and what parts of your game you need to focus on?
JANNIK SINNER: Of course. I know everything what's happening. I know how players play. This is also part of my job because I also have to check these kind of things. I know mostly I look on my side, what I have to do.
At the end of the day tennis, you have one opponent at a time. You cannot prepare tactically something for the next potential opponent because if you lose against this guy, you're out of the tournament.
We take step by step, day by day. Tomorrow is a practice day to prepare the next match. Hopefully prepare it in a good way.
Every player makes some problems on court. You have to try to solve them with every day is different tactic. This is how we approach every match.
