Quick Quotes
Q. Here with Angel Yin. What a spectacular finish. Walk me through the last four holes.
ANGEL YIN: I was hitting it really good and then making the putts. Hitting it close means you're doing only half the job. The other one is to make the putt.
The greens are quite tricky to read and been like this since we've came, so was able to sink those putts.
Q. At what point did you start to get a little bit excited coming down the stretch to post a really solid number and put yourself in the Top 5 right now?
ANGEL YIN: To be honest when my eagle putt went in on the last hole I was shocked. I started shaking a little bit I was so excited. I was a little shocked by how it happened, yeah.
Q. Walk me through the last four holes, clubs, shots, how it came to be.
ANGEL YIN: Yeah, so started on like 15, the par-5. Didn't hit that good of a drive so I had to lay-up. Then I actually didn't realize until I walked up to my third shot where the pin was. That's actually like one of the hardest pins on this green.
So I was like, all right, just hit a good shot. Just so happened to stay up on that little tier. Not a lot of real estate, but managed to stick it on there and then I made that putt.
It was pretty tricky because it was right to left, sneaky quite a bit. So it was like a ball and a half, two ball putt, and then was able to sink that.
Par-3, got a good bounce. Was hoping for a Porsche; did not get it. But then had like a left to right putt about like two balls. Still quite a bit of a breaking putt, so was able to sink that.
Next hole, hit a 5-iron off the tee and then hit a chip 9. Tried to cozy is up in there. Again, tough pin, up on a tier. Managed to grab a tiny bit of real estate with Mi Hyang in my group.
And then had quite a bit of a left to right putt. Was able to catch the corner and sank that.
Then here, hit a drive, 8-iron, sank a pretty long putt from right to left. Just I think textbook perfect.
Q. Yeah. Pretty much. What did you see in the final putt?
ANGEL YIN: Like two houses right to left. It was a lot. Was a lot of subtle breaks. Once it finishes breaking it was also a little bit downhill. Then everything pulls to the lake, so a lot of that in play. I was kind of more just like I want to hit a two-putt. Wasn't like my intention to make it.
My intention, main goal, was to get it past the hole because it's an eagle putt. You don't want to leave it short. Look silly.
Q. Obviously you said it a minute ago, very tricky golf course out here. I know a lot of people it gives them fits and starts. To post that kind of number, to finish that way and to have a really solid finish on your major resume this season, what does that make you feel?
ANGEL YIN: Feels amazing. This is the one major that always give me a lot of headaches. Has been giving my headaches this week. On the greens especially. I mean, look at my stats. I think first day I had three three-putts. Every single day except for today I had a three-putt.
It's really frustrating when I'm good on the greens to not be able to perform on the greens and perform elsewhere. And so you feel like you're really handicapping yourself somewhere that you're good at.
So I think that really eats away, so I have to regroup every day and try to see what I can do better for the next day.
But this course does that, so I'm happy with how I finished. I think this is the best I've ever done.
Q. This finish in terms of your confidence and your game --
ANGEL YIN: I mean, to finish well here means I'm doing something right in my game. Not saying -- not to discredit any other major that I do, but this is honestly the caviar of everything. It's just so difficult for me.
I mean, I hit driver I think three to four times a round, and so I'm trying to place balls everywhere. Placement, golf course management, I'm trying to think smart.
This really challenges me to do that because it's easy to whip out a driver, but it's harder to hit a 4- or 5-iron off the tee.
Q. Are you playing Scottish?
ANGEL YIN: No, I'm not.
Q. Okay. So a lot of confidence going into AIG, a place we're not familiar with. How do you get out of Evian mode, go into Porthcawl and get ready for that links test?
ANGEL YIN: Yeah, so obviously different -- completely different. Going to be like Erin Hills but more linksy, more windy conditions.
Yeah, just going to tap into that mindset where I'm going to hit the ball about a foot off the ground and to keep it rolling out of all the heather, long grass, the fescue that's there, and then hit the putts past the hole because if it doesn't go past it doesn't go in or have a chance to.
