THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome captain of Ripper GC, Cam Smith. 1-under par, currently tied for the lead, still two holes to go.

Can you just talk about the conditions. Pretty windy in here, but you were out there having to play it.

CAM SMITH: Yeah, it was windy the whole day really. Got up the last probably couple of hours. Yeah, just kind of had to deal with it and get on with it. It was very tricky out there, had a very good scrambling day. Hit a lot of good iron shots, a lot of good wedge shots. A lot of good putts in those conditions as well.

Yeah, cruising along all right.

Q. Got two holes to finish off tomorrow morning. What will you take in over the night before you go in tomorrow, then heading into round 2 tomorrow?

CAM SMITH: I don't know really. I think just keep doing what I'm doing. I even hit a lot of drives today that felt like good shots and didn't quite catch the fairway. Just seemed like one of those days where if you got a bit of a gust, it was just going to take your ball anyway.

Did a good job with staying patient. Made a lot of birdies, and like I said, just keep doing what I'm doing. Hopefully I find some more fairways and make some more putts.

Q. How much energy does it take to play under conditions like today? Valderrama is always a challenge. Today I wouldn't say it was not tough, it was brutal.

CAM SMITH: Yeah, I mean, it takes a lot of energy out of you. Just an extra -- I think the extra thinking. This is quite a tough course to walk as well, the ups and downs, so you kind of get the physical effort and the mental effort.

It was definitely getting to a stage with three or four holes to go that everyone was pretty tired out there and angry to be honest. It was a very frustrating day. All of that stuff combined is just really tough, and the golf course. You can play this golf course with no wind and it's brutal. When you get 30 mile-an-hour gusts, it's definitely not an easy place to get around.

Q. Do you think the horn should have blown earlier? You said there was some anger amongst the players. Do you think the decision should have come a little bit earlier?

CAM SMITH: I was out on that back nine, I hit a good shot into 14 there and my ball struggled to stay still. If it wasn't for a bit of a lull in the wind, I think I wouldn't have been able to hit my putt. We went on to play 15, 16 and then the tee shot on 17.

It's easy to feel frustrated, particularly when I doubled 15 and then bogeyed 16 as well. I was trotting along pretty good before that.

But it's golf. Golf isn't fair, at the end of the day. Were the conditions fair? Probably not for a little bit, but it is what it is. We'll get on with it. I'm sure we'll make a good tournament out of it.

Q. What are some of the most difficult rounds that you've played?

CAM SMITH: Yeah, it's pretty brutal. I don't like the cold, so I'm loving that it's still hot. If it was freezing out here and maybe a little bit of mist, it would be brutal.

It's definitely pretty intense. Like I said before, you hit a couple of good shots that you think are going to be pretty good and they end up in the rough. Out here, generally when you're in the rough, you're under a tree and you've got to hit kind of a little low cut or a low hook under something and it just makes it that much harder.

It's just one of those days, it's just a tough day, and you take the good with the bad.

I think I did a pretty good job of staying kind of level-headed out there today.

Q. How did you manage to isolate yourself from the conditions and focus on your game? Are these windy conditions a good preparation for next week's Open Championship?

CAM SMITH: Yeah, I think it's a bit of a cliche, but definitely one shot at a time out here definitely helps. You're going to hit some bad shots. You're going to get blown over by the wind. The ball is going to do some crazy stuff. It's just stuff that you have to take on and really move on with.

The second part of your question there, I think it's really good. You have to hit some really good golf shots out here. You have to flight it. You have to shape it. Everything you have to do next week. Like I mentioned before, if it was another 20 or 30 degrees colder, it's probably right up there with perfect preparation for next week. If it wasn't for the heat, it would be perfect.

Q. Are you happy with the course setup, or did you see anything weird with the pins? It's kind of strange to restart the first round at 8:00 a.m. when there's plenty of time to finish the first round and then play the second round.

CAM SMITH: Yeah, the greens out here are just brutal anyway. A lot of the times I'm sure the officials are looking at pins kind of scratching their heads anyway. It's kind of the lesser of most evils out there on most of the greens today.

Greens like 11 and 14, they have so much slope in them, and it's so windy, so exposed, that it's kind of hard to almost get a good pin out there today. I think those greens firm out a little bit quicker and bake out a little bit more as well.

I personally would have loved to see us go out a little bit earlier, like you mentioned, and get the round in before all the gusts. We knew the gusts were coming.

It is what it is. Like I said before, golf is an unfair game anyway. Yeah, take the good with the bad.

Q. Those first 14 bogey-free holes, is that about as good of a stretch as you've had, do you feel like, this season?

CAM SMITH: Yeah, I think so. I think I just stayed really patient. I think the conditions kind of give you that anyway. You have to stay patient out there.

I've been working hard hitting lots of shots, been working on my flights and all that stuff at home in preparation for this week, or really the next three weeks.

I knew my chances were going to come out there with birdies, and I got off to a really good start, made a few in the first five or six holes. Just kind of had to keep doing what I was doing and stay patient. It was a really good stretch. Any time you're bogey-free around here, it's a really good thing, particularly given those conditions.

Q. You hit your first fairway, and then I think you missed the next eight. Were you close off the fairway? How did you feel like -- obviously you scrambled and were still bogey-free?

CAM SMITH: Yeah, like I mentioned before, I hit a lot of good drives that just landed in the fairway and scutted into the first cut or maybe the first bit of rough.

The fairways are so tight around here, too. If you try and play aggressive and you try and take on those corners, they're pretty hard to hit anyway.

I feel like I only hit one more fairway the rest of the day, but I felt like I hit a few more shots that should have been on the fairway, but we're still in a pretty nice spot.

Although I was off the fairway, I was in a pretty good position most of the time.

MODERADOR: Demos la bienvenida al capitán del Ripper GC, Cam Smith. 1 bajo par, actualmente empatado en el liderato, aún quedan dos hoyos por jugar.

¿Podrías hablarnos de las condiciones? Hace bastante viento aquí dentro, pero tú has tenido que jugar ahí fuera.

CAM SMITH: Sí, realmente hizo viento todo el día. Aumentó hacia el final, probablemente en las últimas dos horas. Solo había que aceptarlo y seguir adelante. Fue muy complicado ahí fuera, pero tuve un día consistente con algunas recuperaciones. Estuve bien con el hierro y conseguí muchos buenos golpes con el wedge. También hice buenos putts a pesar de las condiciones.

Por ahora, todo va bien.

P. Quedan dos hoyos para terminar la ronda 1 mañana por la mañana. ¿Qué vas a hacer esta noche antes de la reanudación mañana, antes de pasar a la segunda ronda?

CAM SMITH: No lo sé realmente. Creo que simplemente seguiré haciendo lo que estoy haciendo. Hoy incluso he dado muchos golpes que me han parecido buenos, pero no han llegado a la calle. Parecía uno de esos días en los que, si había un poco de viento, la bola se desviaba de todos modos.

Hice un buen trabajo manteniendo la paciencia. Hice muchos birdies y, como he dicho, voy a seguir haciendo lo mismo. Espero encontrar más calles y meter más putts.

P. ¿Cuánta energía se necesita para jugar en condiciones como las de hoy? Valderrama siempre es un reto. Hoy no diríamos que ha sido duro, ha sido brutal.

CAM SMITH: Sí, la verdad es que te quita mucha energía, sobre todo por el esfuerzo mental adicional que hay que hacer. Este campo también es bastante difícil de recorrer, con sus subidas y bajadas, así que tienes que hacer un esfuerzo tanto en lo físico como en lo mental.

Sin duda, cuando faltaban tres o cuatro hoyos para terminar, todo el mundo estaba bastante cansado y, sinceramente, enfadado. Fue un día muy frustrante. Todo eso combinado es realmente duro, más aún en este campo de golf. Puedes jugar en este campo sin viento y es brutal. Cuando hay ráfagas de 50 km/h, definitivamente no es un lugar fácil para moverse.

P. ¿Crees que se debería haber parado antes? Has dicho que había cierto enfado entre los jugadores. ¿Crees que la decisión se debería haber tomado un poco antes?

CAM SMITH: Estaba en los últimos nueve hoyos, hice un buen golpe en el 14 y mi bola tenía dificultades para mantenerse quieta. Si no hubiera sido por una pequeña pausa en el viento, creo que no habría podido hacer mi putt. Seguimos jugando el 15, el 16 y luego el golpe de salida en el 17.

Es fácil sentirse frustrado, sobre todo cuando hice doble bogey en el 15 y luego bogey en el 16. Antes de eso, estaba jugando bastante bien.

Pero así es el golf. Al fin y al cabo, el golf no es justo. ¿Fueron justas las condiciones? Probablemente no del todo, pero es lo que hay. Seguiremos adelante. Estoy seguro de que haremos un buen torneo.

P: ¿Esta ha sido una de las rondas más difíciles que has jugado?

CAM SMITH: Sí, ha sido bastante duro. No me gusta el frío, así que me encanta que todavía haga calor. Si hiciera frío y con algo de niebla, sería brutal.

Definitivamente es bastante intenso. Como dije antes, haces un par de buenos golpes que crees que van a estar bien y acaban en el rough. Aquí, generalmente cuando estás en el rough, estás debajo de un árbol y tienes que hacer un golpe bajo con efecto de gancho por debajo de alguna rama, lo que lo hace aún más difícil.

Es simplemente uno de esos días, un día duro, y tienes que aceptar lo bueno con lo malo.

Creo que hice un buen trabajo manteniéndome equilibrado mentalmente hoy.

P: ¿Cómo lograste aislarte de las condiciones y concentrarte en tu juego? ¿Estas condiciones con viento son una buena preparación para el Open Championship de la próxima semana?

CAM SMITH: Sí, creo que es un poco cliché, pero realmente ir golpe a golpe aquí ayuda mucho. Vas a hacer malos golpes. El viento te va a mover. La bola va a hacer cosas locas. Es algo que tienes que aceptar y seguir adelante. Sobre la segunda parte de tu pregunta, creo que sí, es muy buena preparación. Aquí tienes que hacer muy buenos golpes. Controlar la trayectoria, darle forma a la bola… todo lo que hay que hacer la próxima semana. Como mencioné antes, si estuviéramos a 20 o 30 grados menos, sería la preparación perfecta. Si no fuera por el calor, sería ideal.

P: ¿Estás contento con el diseño del campo o viste algo raro con las posiciones de bandera? Es algo extraño reiniciar la primera ronda a las 8:00 a.m. cuando hay tiempo suficiente para terminarla y luego jugar la segunda.

CAM SMITH: Sí, los greens aquí son brutales de por sí. Muchas veces estoy seguro de que los oficiales miran las posiciones de bandera y se rascan la cabeza.

Hoy era cuestión de elegir el menor de los males en muchos de los greens.

Los greens del 11 y 14, por ejemplo, tienen mucha pendiente y están muy expuestos al viento, así que era casi imposible encontrar una buena posición hoy. Además, esos greens se secan y se endurecen más rápido. Personalmente, me habría encantado salir un poco antes, como mencionaste, y completar la ronda antes de que llegaran las ráfagas fuertes. Sabíamos que venían. Es lo que hay. Como dije antes, el golf es un deporte injusto. Tienes que aceptar lo bueno con lo malo.

P: Esos primeros 14 hoyos sin bogeys, ¿han sido de lo mejor que has jugado esta temporada?

CAM SMITH: Sí, creo que sí. Me mantuve muy paciente. Las condiciones ya te obligan a tener paciencia. He estado trabajando duro, pegando muchos golpes, trabajando la trayectoria en casa para prepararme para esta semana… o realmente para las próximas tres semanas. Sabía que tendría oportunidades de birdie, y empecé muy bien, hice varios birdies en los primeros cinco o seis hoyos. Luego era cuestión de seguir haciendo lo mismo y mantener la paciencia. Fue una muy buena racha.

Cualquier ronda sin bogeys aquí ya es un gran logro, especialmente con estas condiciones.

P: Pegaste calle en el primer hoyo y luego fallaste las siguientes ocho. ¿Te quedaste cerca? ¿Cómo lo sentiste, teniendo en cuenta que aún así estuviste libre de bogeys?

CAM SMITH: Sí, como dije antes, hice varios buenos golpes desde el tee que aterrizaron en la calle pero rodaron hasta el primer corte o al rough ligero.

Las calles aquí son muy estrechas. Si juegas agresivo y tratas de cortar esquinas, son difíciles de acertar. Creo que solo pegué una calle más el resto del día, pero sentí que varios de mis golpes merecían estar en la calle. Aun así, estuve en buenas posiciones la mayor parte del tiempo, aunque estuviera fuera de la calle.
