Q. A sizzling ing 61. Last night you came home on the harder side of the golf course and you came home clean. Could you feel a day like this coming?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: Sure. I don't know. I definitely got off to not a great start. Was really hitting some wayward shots and just trying to hit some solid shots and started to find a little rhythm. Definitely put together a solid nine holes and felt like that was good momentum coming into today.
Q. Firing on all cylinders, every aspect of your game was solid today. How much did the wind change and the golf course flipping direction change the way this golf course played or was it simply you finding something in your golf swing today?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: I definitely played good today. Not a lot of wind in the morning which was obviously beneficial. But yeah, it's funny, when it flips you get some holes that you like and some holes that you don't like and vice versa. I think there's definitely certain holes that feel nice. Nice three pars to finish.
You just take what you can get, what the course gives you with the wind, and I think it's much more pin location oriented and where you can get to in some spots you have to be smart and take your 30-footer on some holes.
Q. Were you go we ask a lot of players playing full time playing the PGA TOUR do you embrace links golf, etc. Do you like the variety this week?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: Yeah, I think it's fun. We went over to North Berwick on Tuesday, and it's not TPC Deer Run where it's point-and-shoot and you have to be on.
I like working the ball and I think I'm creative in some aspects. When you get a little wind and some bouncing, it just makes it fun. Doesn't make it any easier. You've got to be on and hit some good shots. I think it's definitely, like you said, a change of pace and it's a nice change of pace.
Q. Course record-tieing 61, a lot of highlights but the opening nine, 29, seven 1-putts. What was the highlight of the opening round?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: I guess a lot of them. I think 9 was a good, all right, I've got something going here. Because there are some gettable holes to start. Picked up a bonus on 2. Actually lipped-out pretty hard on the first hole of the day. And I'll take what I can get.
Yeah, it was pretty stress-free for the most part and that's always good around here.
Q. Over 130 feet of putts made today. What is your comfort level on these greens, and how did you get there?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: That's a good question. I feel like my putting has been my Achilles' heel for the whole year, honestly. I don't know, maybe it's because I have to hit everything hard and you're really not worried about feel that much. It looks nice and it feels good and going to keep it rolling the rest of the weekend.
Q. Did 59 pop up in your head?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: Not really. I made the putt on 14 and I was like, all right, I've got 16 and obviously 17 and 18 are pretty tough. So I really wanted to get 16. Obviously it is what it is. I'm not going to complain too much when I make my birdies on a course that isn't always typically easy.
So I'll take what I can get and hopefully maybe there's a couple more out there for me this weekend.
Q. Give us your insight on a fantastic round of golf.
CHRIS GOTTERUP: Yeah, like we were just saying, I'll take a 9-under any day. Relatively stress-free for the most part which is always nice.
Other than 16, I think I played really well today. I didn't do much wrong on 16. Just didn't make a birdie on a hole that you'd like to. Whether I was in the fairway or not I was in the right position, which is key I feel like around here. Nothing else to say, really.
Q. If you go back to the start of the day, did you do anything different in your warmup? What was your mindset?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: I had a hard time getting up all week so it took some motivation getting up at 5:15 or whatever it was. I definitely got off to a slow start yesterday and finished strong and tried to carry that over into today. Like I said, obviously I found a little something out there today. Yeah, hopefully just keep it rolling this weekend.
Q. If you look at your season more broadly, there's plenty of positive things. You've not had any top 10s but you've had a bunch of Top 15s, Top-20s. How would you summarise it so far?
CHRIS GOTTERUP: I think it's a mix of very good and also a bit disappointing. Obviously playing good, but there's definitely been rounds or tournaments of three good rounds and one kind of, eh. Just trying to really pile on good rounds. Been putting well this week, and that's a big positive there. Just trying to carry that into the weekend and the rest of the season.
