Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: All right, we will begin now with amateur and recent winner on the LET, Lottie Woad. Lottie, I just have a couple questions for and you then we'll open it up.
You're coming fresh off your win at the KPMG Women's Irish Open. Can you just talk about what this week meant to you as a whole?
LOTTIE WOAD: Yeah, it meant a lot. Hadn't played in Ireland that much before. Such a fun week. The fans were amazing, and got to test my game against some really good players. Just really happy with how I kind of put my foot in front and really didn't look back.
Really fun over the weekend.
Q. This is your second time playing here at the Evian Championship. What have you learned most about this course playing here last year?
LOTTIE WOAD: Yeah, I think it's a pretty strategic golf course. There is a lot of different kind of quadrants on the greens and maybe some angles that you want to have in that it's going to be helpful to know now. Just knowing lines off tees and stuff like that is always helpful beforehand.
Q. Major storyline coming into this next stretch of golf is your position on the LPGA Elite Amateur Pathway. What can you say about the pathway and your progression through as No. 1 in the standings right now?
LOTTIE WOAD: Yeah, it's obviously very new and I'm happy that I get the opportunity to try and earn these points. Got a few opportunities coming up, so I'm just trying to play good golf and then see where it puts me in the end and make a decision after that.
Q. Obviously you spent a lot of time in the U.S. Being back in Europe where you're from, what do you miss the most when you're away in the United States and what are you most excited to do when you get back in Europe?
LOTTIE WOAD: The food. Yeah, I think just that over here, so, yeah.
Q. What specifically food-wise?
LOTTIE WOAD: The chocolate. It's better in England than in America.
Q. Looking at LEAP I know it's such a unique opportunity for young athletes like yourself. How critical do you think a program is like this is to the health of not just amateur golf, but the health of golf globally for the LPGA Tour, LET, and beyond?
LOTTIE WOAD: Yeah, I think it's great. Obviously be amazing if you don't have to go to Q-School. That's such a tough week. If I can bypass that, that would be great. I think it just encourages everyone to go to college and maybe play a bit more amateur golf which never really hurts anyone, and take the time to develop and get these points.
Q. Do you feel like staying in college has really helped your game progress as long as you were at Florida State?
LOTTIE WOAD: Yeah, definitely. Hadn't played in the U.S. before until I went to college. It's definitely different, different types of courses, and just being in the environment that we get in those colleges and having all the opportunities and the coaches and the facilities; it's just second to none.
Q. I just wonder, could you enlarge a little bit on your thoughts about turning pro?
LOTTIE WOAD: I mean, I haven't fully thought about it. I'm just trying to focus on each week and get the points and then I'll decide after I've done that.
Q. So should you get the points, will you ditch your college career?
LOTTIE WOAD: I haven't decided yet. I just don't want to think too far ahead. Just get the points and focus on the golf really, and the rest will take care of itself.
Q. How did you celebrate last week, and did you do anything special particularly?
LOTTIE WOAD: I mean, not really. I flew at 6:00 a.m. the next day to here, so haven't really done anything.
Q. Not much related to that, but one thing you said is playing more amateur golf is not a bad thing. What is good about amateur golf, and why it would be good to play as much as you can?
LOTTIE WOAD: I think just playing in college is great. All the best kind of amateurs go and we're playing each other each week and it's very competitive. Now we as amateurs have opportunities to play in events like this and just gain experience, which never hurts.
Q. I think it was just a little bit more than a year ago you won the ANWA in Augusta. Do you think things are happening very fast or is it according to your expectations?
LOTTIE WOAD: I think after that definitely changed a little bit. Got to go from hardly playing in any pro events before that to new now getting to play in majors, so definitely changed on that front.
Feel like it slowed down a little bit.
Q. And then you kind of showed it a little bit, but how do you manage the expectations of people in your career and results, turn pro, not turn pro? What do you do with all that?
LOTTIE WOAD: I try to ignore them as much as possible, but that sometimes can be hard. Just try and focus on each round at a time and just my golf rather than other opportunities and stuff like that.
Q. Going back to this week, obviously having a lot of major experience in the last year and a half, how would you maybe rate the Lottie that started playing in major tournaments last year to now? How much more experience and how much more comfortable do you feel in this environment?
LOTTIE WOAD: Yeah, my first major was a week or so after ANWA, so it was a pretty quick turnaround. I just carried the momentum into that. Didn't really think much about, so played well there.
I think going into the U.S. Open last year hadn't really played courses like that, like really tough courses, and missed the cut there, so learnt a lot about that.
Then the U.S. Open this year played nicely and just kind of feel like I matured a bit from the year before.
Q. Looking ahead to this week, I know there is a lot of things that are swirling for you, when you look at your goals and keeping the momentum rolling from the LET win last week, what did you want to accomplish in week in terms of the golf?
LOTTIE WOAD: I mean, yeah, I'm just trying to carry on the momentum. If that means I can be in contention, that would be great. Just really just trying to look to play good golf and continue what I was doing last week.
Q. What are the keys to this golf course for a game like yours? What do you have to focus in on lock in on to do well at a place like Evian?
LOTTIE WOAD: I think the first step is being in position off the tee here. There is a few tighter holes and you don't really want to be coming at these greens out of the rough. If you hit the fairway, you're going to have some good opportunities.
Q. Anything that happened to you last year playing here for the first time that you really don't want to repeat again? On the course.
LOTTIE WOAD: I can't even remember it that well. I mean, I don't know. My strategy will be pretty similar to last year. It was just a couple of shots. There are a couple of shots here and there all the time, but just going to stick to that, and, yeah.
Q. Congratulations on your win. Just to get away from the golf for a minute, what do you do to chill, hang out, have fun away from all the work that you put in obviously to get some good results? What do you look to do here Evian? Jump across to Switzerland? Who knows. Chocolate is better there.
LOTTIE WOAD: Yeah, I don't know what I'm going do here. We're in an airbnb. My dad and coach is here. We'll just have fun. Usually just hang out with friends and family. Like to watch a lot of other sports as well. Big football fan, so, that.
Yeah, I've been watching the tennis, so that'll be a good thing, too.
Q. What's Lottie like away from the golf course, you know, so we see another side. Favorite color?
LOTTIE WOAD: Favorite color? Blue. (Laughter.)
