TPC Deere Run
Quick Quotes
Q. Matt, obviously conditions a little windy out there. Pin placements tough. Talk about the track and how it played today.
MATT KUCHAR: Yeah, throwing in this sort of wind, this golf course presents some challenges, particularly off the tee. If you're not driving it well you can find yourself in the rough, behind trees, and struggling to getting access to get close to greens.
This wind has certainly thrown a little curve ball into what guys were shooting some pretty low numbers. It's going to be tough to put up a low number. I think it's still doable. I think this course is so great in that if you are really on good form, I'm sure you'll see some guys 6-under par today.
If you're struggling, you're going to pay the price. I love the fact when a course shows some teeth and offers you the chance to go ahead and make birdies if you are playing well.
Q. Surprised at how compact the leaderboard is at all the guys tied at the top right now?
MATT KUCHAR: Yeah, yeah. I'm guessing by the end the day you'll get a couple guys that have gotten 1, 2, 3 shots a head of the rest of us. Certainly makes for a fun Sunday when a bunch of guys have a chance.
Q. Obviously today with the swirling winds it's more difficult, playing more difficult. It seems like almost since Thursday afternoon this golf course has been playing atypically. The scoring is just not what scoring typically is.
MATT KUCHAR: It's as firm as we've seen this place. I always think the firmer you get the greens the higher the winning score is going to be, the higher the cut score will be.
And so you're right, typically this place, I'm guessing cut is more like 7-under, 6-under. We were at 4-under for the cut.
So, yeah, I think with greens being firm and then throw in some wind, this is not the typical John Deere where it's 20-ish under par.
There is a pretty good test, particularly today.
Q. If it rains, when it rains today, do you anticipate the greens obviously be softer tomorrow, scoring will go down?
MATT KUCHAR: Yeah, again, I don't know wind forecast, but soft greens helps scoring a lot.
Q. I'm not calling you old, but relative to your competition, putting up a good fight.
MATT KUCHAR: Yeah, yeah.
Q. Take me through that, being so competitive at your age.
MATT KUCHAR: I don't know how to take you through it other than knowing you'll get there. You'll get there. Listen, I still feel like a kid. I still get excited to come to those tournaments.
One of the unique things about the game of golf is every week we all start at even par, we all have a chance of doing something great.
I think if you happen to be a professional baseball player and your team starts 10-40 it would be tough to keep going, but golf gives that you hope every week that you show up and you got a chance to do something great.
So I show up here excited. I show up hoping to do something great this week.
Q. Anything about this event specifically that has drawn you to it that you really enjoy here?
MATT KUCHAR: Really enjoy Duck City Bistro last night, as well I do think it's a good test of golf. I mentioned earlier how golf course, if you play well, really on good form, you can go ahead and make some birdies. If you're not on form the course is going to jump up with bite you.
I think you've seen a spread of scores. You've seen some guys kind of struggle, particularly today. Seeing higher scores today and also I think you'll see pretty decent scores.
Q. You see it getting progressively tougher now? The wind definitely picked up on your back nine, right?
MATT KUCHAR: Yeah, I'm not sure how much longer these guys are going to be playing. It sounds like storms coming in maybe in the next hour. If play stops, I think that helps. Wind right now is blowing a good 10, 15 miles an hour. That provides a nice challenge.
