Quick Quotes
Q. Nice Sunday. Let's talk about your round. What was working and what your thoughts were coming through.
JASON CARON: I thought I played pretty good most of the week. I think I made some -- not the best decision-making was my downfall for the week.
Then today I hit it close a bunch, which didn't have to rely on thinking about where the mountain is, just kind of like the only two-, three-, four-footers. That was nice. I didn't have to think about it a whole lot.
I mucked up a little bit there on 17 with my second putt. I'm not perfect. I made up for it on the last hole with a birdie.
Q. You had kind of a streaky birdie run there and then closed pretty good. Birdie-wise, I want you to describe what went on there.
JASON CARON: Early in the day for 16, I think all my birdies were pretty close ones. I think they were in and around four feet.
Q. Uphill?
JASON CARON: Yeah, uphillers. It was just like meant to be. Didn't have to think a lot about them. So that was nice.
When I got to 16, I hit a good 9-iron in there left of the pin, but I had probably a 25-footer down and sliding and made it right in the middle, which was great.
Then on 18 I hit a nice shot in there and made about a 10-footer.
Q. This may come down to 18th hole. What do you think are the key holes on the back, say, for anybody that's battling?
JASON CARON: You start out on 10, you get a 500-yard hole. Then the next hole is 400-something. So you've got almost 1,000 yards on the first two holes. If you keep the ball in play, meaning in the fairway, you're going to have some shorter irons in because you're at altitude. Those guys that are on the leaderboard hit it pretty long.
So I would expect them to have some short irons in. Even though the hole is 500-something yards, they can still hit short irons in. But in the fairways where you have to be, otherwise you're just guessing.
Q. Can you not stop it from the rough, it's pretty tough?
JASON CARON: It's pretty tough because you never know what kind of lie you got. Today I got the good lies. I feel like all week I got bad lies in the rough, and today I got some good lies.
Q. You're still a home pro, club pro?
JASON CARON: Yes.
Q. Tell me about that.
JASON CARON: I'm the head golf professional at the Mill River Club in Oyster Bay, New York, which is on Long Island. I'll be back to work on Tuesday, we have Monday off. Splitting time out here on the PGA TOUR Champions and working at Mill River.
So it's a good balance. My wife works with me, which helps. She can kind of keep me in the loop of what's going on. I've got some great assistants. It's been working great.
Q. Does a club pro ever get to play enough golf?
JASON CARON: At home, no. The reason why I say that is I think that I could play more, but I think there's so many different aspects of the job that I just -- I kind of -- I tell my members, if you want me to play, I'll play. You just have to let them know inside, mark my book off, and I'll come play with you guys. I have no problem with that.
It's just that during the day there's a lot of things going on that I need to be around and check up on.
Q. Do you get to play steady, though? Do you play everything you can?
JASON CARON: Yeah, in the Met section, we have arguably the best section in the country when it comes to playing, our tournaments, our sponsors. They do a wonderful job up there. Most of us that are active playing in the event want to play in all the events because they're so good.
Yes, I do play quite a bit up there. Now my status has changed I can't play up there, but I've been able to play out here.
Q. Looks like you may be exempt next year, which is not a small feat in itself.
JASON CARON: It's been great. It's been a great year. Last year was just an incredible year.
