Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Good afternoon, everyone. Pleased to have with us this afternoon Miguel Angel Jimenez, who recorded an 8-under 64 today in the final round of the Senior Open. Miguel, what was your mindset coming in today knowing you were trailing the leaders by quite a bit?
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ: I know I need to shoot low if I want to have an option. I start about a bogey on the 1st hole. I missed it on the right and missed the putt. Then I played very solid.
At the 18th I made eight birdies and I finished with a bogey on the last. I miss my 3-wood on the left and it was almost unplayable. I can't get it to go past the water, but I know had to hit it short and try to make another (indiscernible) shot to high left, and then missed the putt for par.
But I'm very solid. I'm very happy with the way I've been playing. Very solid all day, though. Eight birdies, two bogeys, one to finish.
Q. How difficult was the decision on 18 to try to go for it?
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ: If I had a chance to get on the green, I would go for that. But as I was talking with my caddie, okay, maybe you can pass the water, but we cannot do anything from there. Is it worth the risk?
Then I still need to go, but he's right. Then make not a bad wedge where I hit it after. I went high left more or less, pin high and missed it, but at least give myself a chance to make 4. But if I put it in the water, bye-bye.
Q. What was different for you today than the first three days?
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ: I've been hitting very well all week. We make mistakes. We are human. Just made a couple of mistakes. Made a few too many bogeys. Yesterday I finished 2-under par with five bogeys. I make birdies, but yesterday I make too many bogeys.
Today I make two bogeys too many. But I've been hitting good. You make birdies and you play good, you're hitting well.
Yesterday made some not very good decisions at some point, and that's how you make bogeys.
Q. You've played a lot of golf in your career, but whenever you're making that run on the back nine, how much are you looking at the scoreboard?
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ: Of course I'm looking at the scoreboard. I know where I am of course. I put pressure on me. If there's pressure there, you know that you are close.
Yesterday 10-under par is the target. It's going to be minus 11 is going to win, but that is the target to make some impression there.
Q. Do you have any sort of final thoughts on the course and the venue and just the experience here this week?
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ: No, it's a beautiful place. We've had some thunderstorms, but it's a beautiful week. That's the area. But the Broadmoor, the place is beautiful. It's nice. Beautiful resort, and the golf course is selective. You need to play well to score here, you know.
Q. Was the course easier today, or did you play a lot better today?
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ: Well, you see the scores, no? You see the scores. This golf course is not easy. I played today very well. I gave myself a lot of chances for birdie. I make eight birdies today. I play brilliant. These greens are super fast. If you are in the wrong place, it's very difficult to go past. It's nice. It's a good test.
Q. You've played very well in this championship. What is it about this championship that brings out such greatness in your game?
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ: Well, majors always give you something more. You focus. You're going to win. I did very well under pressure, and that's something.
