U.S. OPEN

September 1, 1995

Richard Krajicek

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK

Q. Were you satisfied with the way that you were playing?

RICHARD KRAJICEK: First two sets I was satisfied. Actually the whole match I was pretty satisfied. Just in the end I was not happy with my -- I wasn't aggressive with my returns. I think if I was more aggressive, I would have broken him a few more times, and it would have been like 6-2, I think in the third set because I had a few chances, but I was pretty happy with the way I was playing. I was volleying very well. Sharp at the net. I think that is my weapon. So I think it is more important for me that my volleys are going well and that my return of serve is going unbelievable. I think if I made one break a set and I volley the way I do at the moment, it is enough for me.

Q. Can you give us an observation of this kid because it is his first Open?

RICHARD KRAJICEK: Yeah, I know this is first couple of games, he was a little bit nervous; yeah, his serving was like not even 100 miles an hour, but then after 2-1, he loosened up and he started playing well. I mean, I think he is a pretty good player. He returns pretty good, but I think he likes -- he likes the way I play. He likes that I come to net. He likes a target. I don't know what he is going to do against somebody who is going to slow him down from the baseline. But against a player like me, I think he plays very well, and just one thing that really sticks out, I think is his speed around the court. He is not too fast, so if he plays baseline you can move him around. I think he is in big trouble. If he improves that, he hits the ball pretty clean. He has got a big serve and if he works on his service games a little bit more, so he doesn't, you know, each shot against me, one or two service games, he like played a lot less than the other service games, so if he works on that, then he is more consistent on service games; then he is going to be a tough player to beat, for sure, on hard court and indoor courts.

Q. In other words, you are saying to us that you think the kid has a future?

RICHARD KRAJICEK: Yeah, I think so. If he works on his court speed and, yeah, there is always a few things you can improve. I think his serve is good and maybe second serve can be a little bit heavier, but I think if he works on his court speed, he is going to be quicker and volleys -- maybe he is not going to miss some volleys that he is missing, and he is going to be tougher to break and then, yeah, if a guy is tough to break, then that is already half the battle.

Q. Had you gotten reports on him before you saw him? Were you prepared in any way in some way for him?

RICHARD KRAJICEK: This afternoon I saw a picture of him. That is the first time I saw him, actually. And like half hour before the match, 45 minutes before the match, that is the first time I saw him, so all the other things were just what people told me. I heard he has like big serve; he is going for his shots, yeah, so I was prepared for the worst, actually. So I was surprised for me; especially in the beginning that his serve didn't come through; that he was serving pretty soft, actually. But yeah, I heard he was going for everything and coming in a lot, which he wasn't really doing. I don't know why. Maybe that is his game, but I heard he was coming in on everything, but against me, he stayed back back.

Q. When you say you saw him 45 minutes before, where did you see him?

RICHARD KRAJICEK: In the locker room. He is close to my locker. He has got his name on it. I felt -- I was watching for somebody who was going to approach that locker, and then I saw him and he was putting his match clothes on he was talking to the players in the grandstand and I even didn't finish high school and I figured it out.

Q. How do you rate your chances?

RICHARD KRAJICEK: You have to go match by match, but I am for sure pretty happy with the way I am playing. My last 6, I don't know, 7, I mean, a lot of Grand Slams were very bad, and this is the first Grand Slam, actually the second Grand Slam, I mean, French Open I was playing pretty good, but I was a little bit out of shape, but at the moment I feel confident. I had a good tournament just before I came here, New Haven, and physically I feel fit; mentally I feel fit, and yeah, like I said, my strength is working which is my volley game, my serve and volley game, and I think when that is on, I am very tough to beat, so I don't want to talk too much about chances. I am just going to go match by match, but my next match I have a very good chance of winning that match.
