THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 20, 2025

Ethan Fang

Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Ethan, you are a finalist here at the 130th Amateur Championship. How does that feel?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah, it feels great. It's just been a long week, and we've got another 36 to go. I'm ready to get some rest after this.

Q. It looked today like you were in a bit of cruise control mode. Is that how it felt to you?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah, in the afternoon match, yeah. It was a little shaky at first and then I got one hole and I strung a couple on that front nine and after that I kept hitting greens and waiting for the match to be over. Yeah, I was pretty much just cruising all day.

Q. What about this morning's match?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah, I think I'm 1-up through three, and on 4 he holes out from the middle of the fairway, so that was a little surprising and kind of brought me back. I knew it was going to be a pretty good match.

Yeah, just stay focused and calm, and I ended up making three birdies in a row and then came out on top.

Q. It was really nice to see in that hole-out moment you go over and give your opponent a high five. When your opponent is doing things like that, there's not much you can do, but it's all about that sportsmanship, as well?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah, for sure. I'm not going to just blank face him and just walk to the green. It was actually pretty funny, he hit his shot and it probably was a good 30 seconds until we heard a big cheer, and I was like, oh, damn, that might have gone in.

Yeah, that was just a pretty cool shot he hit. He's 16, at the end of the day, so I didn't want to -- you've got to be nice, and he hit a really good shot.

Q. You've played Royal St George's a lot now. Do you feel like you've figured out this course?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah. Yeah, I think I have. But at the end of the day, it's still a really respected course, and anything can happen, especially you get in those pot bunkers. Next thing you know you're chipping out sideways. I think I try to manoeuvre my way around the course, yeah.

Q. You seem really calm but you are only a sleep away from potentially the biggest match of your career so far. Is that how you feel on the inside?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah. I try to stay pretty calm when I play and after. The tournament is not over, so I think after tomorrow we'll celebrate either way because it's been a good week.

All my friends say that, too; you can't tell whether I'm mad or not when I'm out there. I don't know if that's a compliment or not.

Q. Is it hard to stop yourself from dreaming of what could be?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah.

Q. It's so close now.

ETHAN FANG: Yeah, for sure. I think each day as I win a match, it gets that much closer to what the whole tournament is. It's just really hard not to, especially because I'm 36 holes away from it.

But yeah, I just try to stay present and just do everything I've been doing.

Q. There's obviously a lot of history; this is the 130th Amateur Championship. Is it a weird sensation to think about all those players that have come before you that you're kind of walking in their footsteps now?

ETHAN FANG: Yeah, I took a pretty long look on that board over there with the trophies and all those names. Like I saw Sergio won it. It's cool to see all those pro players come out here and win it, and now I'm doing the same thing, and hopefully have their accomplishments on Tour.
