THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 18, 2025

Billy Dowling

Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Speaking with Billy Dowling after a 2 & 1 victory after the first round of the match play at the Amateur Championship. Tell us about that one.

BILLY DOWLING: It was a good round. We both played pretty similar I feel like. Match play can go two different ways, holing putts, shots, and it's just like, it was a good match. But happy to get the win.

Q. Describe the emotions now that you're in the round of 32. That must be pretty comforting.

BILLY DOWLING: Yeah, I'm really happy. This is the furthest I've played in this tournament. I'll just take it one match at a time, but right now I'm feeling quite good.

Q. What was the key to the victory out there today?

BILLY DOWLING: I think I just took it shot by shot and hole by hole. I didn't get ahead of myself thinking where I could take a lead or what could happen. I just stayed in the present. Yeah, it did me wonders.

Q. You've obviously played a little bit of links golf over this part of the world now. What are the learnings that you've been able to take from those experiences into this week?

BILLY DOWLING: I feel like you don't have to hit every shot down the fairway. You can still score from the rough and it's so unpredictable what could happen next. You've just got to try your best on every shot because a birdie could be around the corner.

Q. Did you know much about your opponent today?

BILLY DOWLING: No, I didn't know anything about him to be honest. We didn't talk too much because we were both in our own zones. Everyone is different, but I haven't heard of him before this round.

Q. How do you reset after today and go again tomorrow?

BILLY DOWLING: I think I just think more about my golf and what I can do better because that's all I can do is try my best and execute as many good shots as possible. I'm just going to reevaluate how I feel like I played and what could be better for tomorrow.

Q. You're obviously playing the Amateur Championship, one of the world's premier amateur events. What would it mean to you to be successful come the end of the week?

BILLY DOWLING: Yeah, it would be awesome. I don't even know how it would feel to be honest, but I'm sure everyone would love to do it, and we'll just wait and see.
