THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 17, 2025

Ugo Malcor

Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Here with Ugo Malcor following the second round of the Amateur Championship here at Royal St George's. You must be pretty happy with your 8-under total through two rounds?

UGO MALCOR: Yeah, of course. It's a great two rounds. Yesterday was obviously better, 6-under on the other course, and today 2-under. It was a bit -- it was tough today. I was off at like -- not a really good start, but I kept making pars and just trying to take advantage on the par-5s. It was two good rounds.

Q. Obviously Royal Cinque Ports yesterday and St. George's today. What were the two main differences between the courses and your two rounds?

UGO MALCOR: Yeah, I feel like Cinque Ports, you have the whole back nine downwind and into the wind, so yesterday the nine was really tough, and here it's more like crosswinds. It's not easy, but my putting was really good for sure, driving, putting. That really helped me during those two rounds.

Q. You're obviously 8-under at the moment, sitting atop the leaderboard. What would it mean to you if at the end of the day you ended up qualifying first and medalist here?

UGO MALCOR: Yeah, of course I want just to qualify. If I win, it's just a bonus. But the tournament is just starting, and now it's going to be match play, so it's just the beginning of the tournament.

Q. You've got another Frenchman, another fellow golfer from France up there at the moment. What would it be like to have two Frenchmen --

UGO MALCOR: Yeah, of course it's big, and we have the European Am, the European Team Championship soon, so it's good to see the guys playing good.

Q. You mentioned just before that your caddie knows this course well. As a tour caddie, can you tell us about your relationship with him?

UGO MALCOR: Yeah, big shout-out to my caddie. First week we were walking together. He's a good friend of my coach, so we reached out to him to get on the bag this week, and it was really good. Good numbers all week. I was just believing a lot with him and just trusting him the whole time.

Q. You mentioned the tournament starts tomorrow, the match play. How do you reset after the stroke play and as you go into the match play?

UGO MALCOR: Yeah, it's completely different. It's match play. But I feel like you still have to play a good stroke play to win your match play, so I'm probably just going to keep the same strategy or be a bit more aggressive, but the same plan.

Q. What are you going to do between now and your first match tomorrow?

UGO MALCOR: I'm going to take some rest. It was good to play early today, just take some rest, go see the physios and get some lunch and go back to my house and rest.

Q. Finally, what are the strengths and weaknesses of your game?

UGO MALCOR: Like I said before, putting and driving were really good. Irons were a bit off today, but actually just kept it on the green and tried to make some putts, so it was good.
