THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 17, 2025

Matthis Lefevre

Lancashire, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Matthis, 7-under for the tournament. How do you assess your performance so far?

MATTHIS LEFEVRE: Well, I've had two good days. Very pleased by the way I've played. A lot of good things, a lot of positive, and I've got the right thing to -- at least the first two rounds.

Q. 36 holes done and dusted. How is your body feeling? How are you feeling mentally as you approach the match play?

MATTHIS LEFEVRE: Yeah, I'm feeling very good. I'm feeling very confident. My body is feeling good, too, because my recovery is great. I'm trying to sleep and eat and drink enough. So yeah, I'm feeling very confident and ready for the match play.

Q. You've obviously got a fellow countryman at the moment, Ugo, who's at the top of the leaderboard. What would it mean to have two Frenchmen go deep into this tournament?

MATTHIS LEFEVRE: Well, obviously I'm very proud of France. It's a honour for me to see that both of us are kind of leading the tournament. Ugo is leading the tournament right now. But yeah, of course I'm really happy for him, and that would mean a lot.

Q. Tell us a little bit about your experience at Royal St George's today. What did you make of the golf course?

MATTHIS LEFEVRE: Yeah, the course is just very, very good. I really enjoy it. I'm not used to the links courses. I think I'm learning a lot. I've been learning a lot the past few years playing in England. Just a lot of positive thoughts, I guess, about the course.

I'm really enjoying it.

Q. What were the main differences between St. George's and Cinque Ports yesterday?

MATTHIS LEFEVRE: I guess the design. I feel like those courses are playing quite similar, but as I said, I'm not used to links courses, so maybe English people are going to be upset about what I said, but I feel like I'm playing it the same way.

Q. Obviously match play is a completely different format to stroke play. How do you adjust for the rest of the week?

MATTHIS LEFEVRE: Well, I think that what I have to do is the same thing. I still have to shoot as low as I can except that I'm playing against somebody. I'm still going to play the zones, play the right places, the right swings, and then we'll adapt. That's what changes when we play match play is that we're going to have to adapt depending on what the other guy is doing.

Q. What are the strengths and weaknesses of your game?

MATTHIS LEFEVRE: I'd say my iron game and my driving are my strengths at least for the tournament. Weaknesses, well, I've played 36 holes. I haven't missed a lot of shots. But I don't want to sound cocky, but I would say today my putting was what was kind of the problem to shoot lower.
